After a dazzling international debut, the PSV winger’s skyrocketing valuation could eclipse past legends as experts predict a historic bidding war for the Netherlands’ newest breakout star.
Ruben van Bommel's impressive Netherlands debut has already prompted speculation about his future value, with Mike Verweij predicting that PSV could eventually receive a record transfer fee for the winger.
Speaking on the Kick-off podcast from De Telegraaf, Verweij praised Van Bommel's immediate impact after coming off the bench against Germany last Thursday.
The PSV winger replaced Crysencio Summerville in the 83rd minute and played a decisive role in the closing stages. Van Bommel produced a superb cross with the outside of his foot for Cody Gakpo, who volleyed home in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw for Xavi's Netherlands.
Verweij was particularly impressed by the contribution from the 21-year-old.
“Fantastic. When you come on in minute 83 and have so much impact. I think we’ve talked about it before. He’s really the kind of player that makes you think again: wow.”
The performance has strengthened the belief around Van Bommel's potential, and Verweij went further by suggesting that PSV could eventually receive an enormous fee for him.
According to the journalist, a figure of €60 million would not be enough to reflect Van Bommel's potential.
“€60 million is far too little; I think he will leave for €80 million from PSV.”
Verweij also compared Van Bommel's potential trajectory with that of former PSV winger Gakpo, who eventually left Eindhoven for Liverpool.
“I think he has more conditions than Gakpo. I think he is going to get even better than Gakpo.”
Van Bommel's international debut came after a strong start to the season with PSV, where his performances had already earned him a place in Xavi's Netherlands squad.
However, as relayed by PSV Inside, Valentijn Driessen believes a regular starting place for Oranje is not yet imminent. He argued that Gakpo's status within the team remains a significant factor.
“I don't think so. I don't think Gakpo would like to play as a striker or on the right wing. Then you would make the attacking leader of the past four years subservient to a guy who has just come on the scene.”
For now, Van Bommel's focus remains on establishing himself at both PSV and international level. His late contribution against Germany, however, has already ensured that his name is being discussed at a much higher level.
