Former Oranje international Theo Janssen identifies a kindred spirit in the playmaker’s vision and outspoken personality, hailing the Borussia Dortmund star as his modern-day midfield successor.

Joey Veerman’s return to the Netherlands squad after two years away has been welcomed by former midfielder and current analyst Theo Janssen, who admits he sees plenty of himself in the former PSV star.

Veerman featured throughout the latest Nations League campaign after making his return to Oranje, giving him the opportunity to re-establish himself at the international level.

For Janssen, Veerman’s comeback is particularly pleasing. Speaking to Voetbal International, the former Netherlands international explained why he enjoys watching the midfielder.

‘I Can Really Enjoy Him’

“I’m happy that Joey Veerman is back again. I can really enjoy him,” Janssen said.

The former midfielder believes that admiration is partly rooted in the similarities he sees between himself and Veerman.

“Yes, maybe it’s also because I recognize a lot of myself in him, in almost everything,” Janssen added.

Janssen went as far as to describe Veerman as the modern version of himself, although there is one obvious difference between the two.

“He is the Theo Janssen of our time. He’s only right-footed; I’m left.”

The comparison extends beyond their preferred foot. Janssen believes both players share similar qualities when it comes to progressing the ball and creating opportunities for teammates.

“But neither of us is very fast. Pushing forward, both of us can do that quite well. Playing the ball forward between the lines and freeing people up for goal, both of us have that in us,” he explained.

Veerman Has Continued to Develop

Janssen also pointed to Veerman’s development since establishing himself at the top level.

The midfielder has now spent longer competing at the highest level and has taken the next step in his career by playing for Borussia Dortmund in a major European league.

“He has stayed longer at the top, now at a top club like Borussia Dortmund in a top competition, so he has progressed in that respect,” Janssen said.

For Janssen, however, Veerman’s appeal goes beyond what he does with the ball.

The analyst also sees similarities in their personalities, describing Veerman as someone who remains true to himself and is not afraid to express his views.

“But basically, we have a lot in common as well. Also in terms of character. He’s just himself, just very outspoken, he’s simply a nice person,” Janssen said, as quoted by PSV Inside.

Veerman’s return to Oranje has therefore been met with clear enthusiasm from Janssen, who believes the midfielder brings a distinctive set of qualities to the national team.

His ability to play forward between the lines, create chances and remain composed despite lacking pace is central to the comparison with Janssen.

“When I see Joey Veerman, I get happy,” Janssen concluded.
