PSV had opportunities to extend their lead after taking control of the match.
The visitors were unable to put the contest beyond Porto, however, leaving them vulnerable during a difficult second half as the Portuguese side pushed for an equaliser.
Geertruida and Sergiño Dest both made important interventions to prevent Porto from finding the net. Their defensive contributions helped PSV withstand the pressure and preserve their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
Geertruida’s display earned him UEFA’s Man of the Match award, followed by his inclusion in the governing body’s Team of the Week for the third matchday.
Joined by Kane, Mbappé and Rice
The recognition places the Netherlands international among some of the biggest names in European football.
Geertruida features alongside Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé, while midfielders Declan Rice and Scott McTominay have also been selected following their performances during the same round of fixtures.
For PSV, the defender’s inclusion provides further recognition of the collective performance that secured a valuable result away from home.
Bosz’s team combined attacking initiative with defensive resilience, particularly when Porto increased the pressure in the second half. Although PSV could have made the closing stages more comfortable by scoring a second goal, they ultimately did enough to secure the victory.
