The Austrian midfielder breaks down the elite technical traits that fuelled his former teammates' blockbuster moves to the Bundesliga, identifying the specific qualities that Dortmund and Bayern have acquired.
Paul Wanner has reflected on the qualities of former PSV teammates Joey Veerman and Ismael Saibari after both players left Eindhoven for the Bundesliga last summer.
Wanner joined PSV from Bayern Munich for €15 million and initially had to wait for regular first-team opportunities. After arriving with an injury, the Austrian international eventually became a starter in November 2025.
Speaking on Kicker meets DAZN, Wanner was particularly complimentary about Veerman, who joined Borussia Dortmund after his impressive final season at PSV.
“I think that was also seen, at least partially, in the first matches. Joey is a very, very good player and has very good technique,” Wanner said, as quoted by PSV Inside.
The 20-year-old highlighted Veerman’s composure and ability to control matches through his passing.
“An incredible calm on the ball and he also recognises whether he can read the game very well. Of course, with his passes he can also determine the tempo himself, and from that one can learn an extreme amount.”
Wanner also revealed how much he enjoyed playing alongside the former Volendam midfielder.
“It was also great fun to play together with him for a year. Dortmund got a good one there.”
Wanner was equally positive when discussing Saibari, who moved from PSV to Bayern Munich after a standout campaign.
“Ismael was, of course, a game-changer for us last season. He is a very complete player, dynamic, and dangerous in front of goal,” Wanner said.
“He scored a lot of goals for us last season, and Bayern has also signed a very, very good player because of that. They can look forward to that.”
The PSV midfielder also pointed to Saibari’s physical strength, one-on-one ability and creativity.
“He is very physical, but despite that, also dynamic. He is very good in one-on-one situations, dangerous in front of goal, and he provides assists.”
Wanner therefore expects Saibari to make a significant contribution at Bayern.
“That’s why I have every confidence that Ismael will play an important role at Bayern,” he concluded.
