Peter Bosz eyes a 2027 comeback for his sidelined captain, whose tactical versatility in defense sparked an unbeaten run before a devastating injury halted his momentum.
PSV captain Jerdy Schouten remains on course for a return at the start of 2027, with Peter Bosz confirming that the midfielder and defender remains the club’s first-choice captain despite his lengthy injury absence.
Schouten has been sidelined since suffering a serious injury during PSV’s 4-3 home victory over FC Utrecht on 4 April. The setback ruled him out of the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign and has left PSV without their captain during the opening months of the new season.
Bosz is now preparing for Sunday’s trip to FC Twente, where he is expected to provide a further update on Schouten’s rehabilitation.
Bosz Sets Target For Schouten’s Return
The PSV head coach stressed that there is a target in place for Schouten, although the rehabilitation process means the timeline remains subject to change.
“There is, however, a pinpoint on the horizon, where we are aiming. But during the rehabilitation process that too will sometimes be adjusted,” Bosz said.
The midfielder’s recovery is being managed carefully as PSV look towards the second half of the campaign. While the club is targeting a return around the start of 2027, Bosz made clear that rehabilitation does not always follow a fixed schedule.
Bosz appointed Schouten as PSV captain after Luuk de Jong’s departure. The midfielder initially faced criticism over both his performances and his adjustment to the responsibility of leading the side.
His role subsequently changed dramatically during the 2025/26 campaign.
During PSV’s 4-0 victory away to PEC Zwolle on 4 October 2025, Bosz moved Schouten from midfield into central defence, with Ryan Flamingo making way.
The tactical adjustment had a significant impact on PSV’s results. With Schouten operating from the back, PSV went through the remainder of the league campaign without losing a single match.
All four of PSV’s league defeats last season came in matches in which Schouten had been deployed in midfield, underlining the different tactical demands placed on him in the two positions.
Waiting For The Captain’s Return
Despite his prolonged absence, Bosz continues to view Schouten as a key figure within the squad and retains him as the club’s first captain.
His ability to operate in both midfield and defence also gives PSV tactical flexibility, which Bosz extensively utilised last season.
For now, however, Schouten’s focus remains on completing his rehabilitation. PSV have a target in sight, but Bosz’s latest comments underline that the club will not rush the captain’s return.
With the start of 2027 on the horizon, PSV will continue to monitor his progress before determining when Schouten is ready to resume competitive football.
