Sergiño Dest struck a vital second-half response to cancel out Mendoza’s clinical opener, ensuring the Dutch giants salvaged a tense draw after a controversial first-half setback in Eindhoven.

PSV were forced to settle for a point in their Champions League opener as Shakhtar Donetsk held Peter Bosz’s side to a 1-1 draw at the Philips Stadion.

PSV began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday evening, recovering from a stoppage-time deficit but failing to find the winner in Eindhoven.

The hosts started with purpose, looking to build on their strong scoring record from last season. PSV had scored 16 goals across eight Champions League matches in 2025-26, averaging two per game, their best scoring rate in a single campaign since 1992-93.

Ivan Perišić came close inside the opening five minutes after Ruben van Bommel sprinted down the left, while Filip Kostić later made a dangerous run and low cross into the area. Ricardo Pepi tried to connect, but Shakhtar cleared.

PSV also showed their defensive aggression early on, with Lutsharel Geertruida producing an excellent tackle to dispossess Marlon Gomes.

Shakhtar gradually settled into the contest and enjoyed 53 per cent possession around the 13-minute mark. Matěj Kovář was alert when Vinicius Tobias attempted to find Marlon Gomes in the box, coming off his line to claim the ball.

PSV then almost profited from a Shakhtar mistake. Alisson Santana was dispossessed outside his own penalty area, allowing Pepi to set up Kodai Sano. The Japanese midfielder shifted onto his left foot but fired straight at goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.

After Kauã Elias received treatment following a collision with Armando Obispo, Vinicius Tobias became the first player booked after catching Van Bommel just outside the area.

Shakhtar Strike Before Half-Time

PSV appeared to have weathered Shakhtar's pressure, but the visitors delivered a painful blow in the first minute of stoppage time.

Isaque picked out Mendoza on the left, with the midfielder cutting inside Geertruida before curling a superb finish into the bottom-right corner. It was Shakhtar's first shot on target.

PSV immediately protested, believing Sergiño Dest had been fouled in the build-up. VAR checked the incident, but the goal stood after the officials determined there had been no foul.

The half ended with Shakhtar leading 1-0. PSV had four shots, one on target, while Shakhtar also had four attempts, one on target.

Dest Restores Parity

PSV responded quickly after the restart.

Mendoza was booked for a late challenge on Kostić before the hosts finally found their equaliser. Obispo rolled the ball into the penalty area for Dest, who calmly placed a right-footed strike into the bottom-right corner.

The move began with a Kostić throw-in down the left before Van Bommel found Obispo outside the area. Obispo then supplied the final pass for Dest to finish.

PSV immediately pushed for more. Van Bommel nearly put the hosts ahead when his effort from around 20 yards went narrowly wide.

The match became increasingly physical. Pedro Henrique and Obispo were booked, before Van Bommel was also cautioned following a late lunge on Pedro Henrique.

Van Bommel continued to provide PSV with an attacking outlet, beating two Shakhtar players before teeing up Geertruida, whose effort was blocked.

PSV Push, Shakhtar Survive

Shakhtar threatened at the other end when Isaque broke down the right and fired a close-range effort straight at a relieved Kovář.

PSV made changes as the game entered its final stages, with Ryan Flamingo replacing Kostić and Sven Mijnans making his Champions League debut in place of Pepi.

Van Bommel remained central to PSV’s attacking threat, sending a dangerous cross towards the back post, which Riznyk clawed away.

Dest was then booked, while Shakhtar's Kryskiv received a yellow shortly after coming on for pulling down Paul Wanner. PSV appealed for a red card, believing the midfielder had been the last defender.

There was still time for one final opening. Marlon Gomes was booked after bringing down Van Bommel, but Perišić sent the resulting free-kick well over the crossbar.

That proved to be the final action as PSV and Shakhtar shared the points.
