PSV Eindhoven are closing in on a deal for Lutsharel Geertruida, with RB Leipzig now seemingly open to an initial loan. The defender is keen on the move, but a final agreement between the clubs is still required.

PSV Eindhoven are edging closer to signing Lutsharel Geertruida on an initial loan from RB Leipzig, with negotiations entering a decisive stage.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that PSV are closing in on a deal for the Netherlands international, while Real Sociedad and Everton have also explored the conditions of a possible move. A final decision on the player's side is expected within the next 24 hours.

However, according to PSV watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, PSV remain cautious despite the growing optimism.

PSV Have Personal Agreement With Geertruida

PSV have already reached a personal agreement with Geertruida, who has made it clear that he is eager to move to Eindhoven.

"PSV has personally agreed with the player, who is eager to move to Eindhoven," Elfrink reports. "It's now just a waiting game for a definitive deal with RB Leipzig, where a few more people still need to make a decision. Until then, no 100% certainty."

That final agreement with Leipzig has been the main obstacle throughout the negotiations.

The German club initially preferred to sell the 26-year-old rather than loan him out, but the situation now appears to have shifted. PSV's preference has consistently been an initial one-season loan, with a permanent transfer considered financially difficult.

After weeks of discussions, Leipzig now appears increasingly willing to consider that route.

Competition Still Remains

PSV have been working on Geertruida's arrival for several weeks, but they have not been alone in their interest.

Ajax have also been in contact, while Romano reports that Real Sociedad and Everton have explored the possibility of signing the defender before the transfer window closes.

Despite that competition, PSV currently appear to have the strongest position because of their existing agreement with the player.

Elfrink stresses, however, that the deal cannot yet be considered complete.

"Yet according to the Eindhovens Dagblad there is still no 100% certainty," the PSV watcher reports.

Defensive Reinforcement A Priority

The pursuit of Geertruida comes as PSV's defensive concerns have become increasingly prominent during the opening stages of the season.

Ryan Flamingo has come under scrutiny following mistakes against Fortuna Sittard and Excelsior, while PSV also conceded four goals against AZ in the Johan Cruyff Shield. Their defensive struggles were evident during pre-season too, including the 3-1 defeat by Villarreal.

Those results have strengthened the calls for Peter Bosz to add another experienced defender to his squad.

Geertruida, who has extensive Eredivisie experience from his time at Feyenoord and is a Netherlands international, fits the profile PSV have been seeking.

For now, the defender remains a Leipzig player. But with PSV having already agreed personal terms and Leipzig seemingly softening its stance on a loan, the next 24 hours could prove decisive.
