Despite a crucial Champions League victory, the Czech goalkeeper’s erratic display fuels doubts over his reliability and PSV’s ability to compete with Europe’s elite clubs long-term.
Valentijn Driessen has questioned whether Matej Kovar is good enough to help PSV Eindhoven reach the next level, describing the goalkeeper as an “uncertain factor” despite the Dutch champions’ 1-0 victory over FC Porto in the Champions League.
Peter Bosz’s side secured three important points at the Estádio do Dragão, with Guus Til scoring the decisive goal. However, Kovar’s performance attracted scrutiny, as the Czech goalkeeper produced several excellent saves but also made mistakes that threatened to bring Porto back into the contest.
Driessen eventually delivered his assessment of the PSV goalkeeper, arguing that his inconsistency remains a concern for a team hoping to establish itself among Europe’s leading clubs.

Kovar was not entirely at fault during PSV’s difficult moments in Portugal. The goalkeeper made several impressive interventions that prevented Porto from finding an equaliser and helped Bosz’s side preserve their narrow advantage.
However, his performance was also punctuated by questionable decisions.
Around 15 minutes before the end, Kovar’s distribution against Kostic put PSV under unnecessary pressure. A few minutes later, he came out of his goal poorly, creating another dangerous situation that could have proved costly.
Those contrasting moments summed up the concern surrounding the goalkeeper: he is capable of producing outstanding saves, but his errors can undermine the defensive work in front of him.
Driessen was particularly critical of that unpredictability, arguing that PSV’s defenders must continue to account for the uncertainty surrounding their goalkeeper.
“He remains an uncertain factor. He stays vulnerable at certain moments, and at other moments he pulls out certain balls that make you think: how does he do that?” Driessen said, as quoted by PSV Inside.
“With that uncertainty, all of PSV’s defenders will have to keep living, because that, of course, isn’t going to change.”

Driessen also questioned whether PSV could make further progress in Europe with Kovar as their first-choice goalkeeper.
The journalist acknowledged that the Czech international possesses the ability to make exceptional saves, but suggested that his current standard may not be sufficient if the club's ambitions increase.
“A goalkeeper has a certain level, and Kovar is at the level that is good enough for PSV and this round of the Champions League,” Driessen explained.
“If you really want to go further and take a step in the back, then a certain goalkeeper is indeed desirable.”
His comments raise a broader question about PSV’s long-term goalkeeping plans. Kovar has demonstrated that he can deliver important interventions, but his occasional mistakes continue to create doubts about his reliability.
Driessen believes those weaknesses are becoming a recurring issue rather than isolated incidents.
“I have to be honest that he has rescues that you think: how the hell does he do that? But there are moments in return with which he could also help Porto back into the match,” he added.

PSV’s victory in Porto was an important achievement for Bosz, whose side combined attacking intent with the resilience required to protect their lead during a tense second half.
Kovar played his part in securing the result, and his saves should not be overlooked. Nevertheless, the errors highlighted by Driessen illustrate why opinion among PSV supporters remains divided.
The goalkeeper’s challenge now is to produce greater consistency and reduce the mistakes that give opponents opportunities to recover.
For PSV, the Porto result offered plenty of encouragement. But if the club wants to progress further in the Champions League, the debate over whether Kovar can provide the reliability required at the highest level is unlikely to disappear.
