The midfielder’s dominant return under Xavi Hernandez signals a new era for Oranje, sparking sharp criticism of Ronald Koeman’s previous refusal to utilize the playmaker’s vision.

Joey Veerman has quickly re-established himself in the Netherlands midfield under new head coach Xavi Hernandez, and Valentijn Driessen believes the former PSV midfielder could become increasingly important for Oranje.

Veerman started Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Serbia, helping the Netherlands secure Xavi’s first win as national team coach. It was another significant step in his international return after two years away from the squad.

The midfielder had not played for the Netherlands since Euro 2024 under Ronald Koeman. He returned as a substitute against Germany last Thursday before earning a starting role against Serbia.

Driessen was impressed by what he saw in Belgrade and believes Veerman’s return could become particularly important with Frenkie de Jong currently unavailable.

“Yes, Frenkie de Jong will not be there for the time being. If Veerman also shows himself like this against Greece and at home against Serbia, that promises a lot of good for the Dutch national team,” Driessen said in a video item for De Telegraaf, as quoted by PSV Inside.

The journalist highlighted Veerman’s ability to play forward and influence the Netherlands’ build-up.

“He brings a lot of depth to the game and always tries to play ahead. He is also very composed and reliable, looks for the outside lanes and sometimes even sees the solutions from the inside.”

Veerman also played a part in the winning goal against Serbia. His pass found Guus Til, who then provided the assist for Mexx Meerdink’s decisive second goal.

Driessen ultimately linked Veerman’s return to the decision made by Koeman after Euro 2024.

“Veerman had to spend two years on the bench under Koeman and is now, in a way, proving it right,” Driessen said.

With Xavi giving him a prominent role, Veerman now has another opportunity to establish himself as a regular part of the Netherlands midfield.
