Enrique Riquelme officially announces his candidacy for Real Madrid presidency against Florentino Perez after a trophyless season.

Last week, the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, held a surprise news conference in which he addressed various topics that had begun circulating on social media, including the club's new election campaign.

Perez appeared visibly attacked by the press. He blamed them for wanting to discredit his image because, in his view, a campaign of hate was being waged against Real Madrid and against him.

It is no surprise that the media took the time to attack the club, given the poor season they endured, without a single title won and a dressing room torn apart internally, full of star players.

Furthermore, the Spaniard bluntly said that if anyone had a problem with how things were being handled at the club, they could run against him, because he would call elections.

In response to his words, the fans believed that no one would be able to stand up to him, with a deadline to present proposals set for Saturday, May 23.

Time passed, and no one ran, but little by little, the name of the Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme began to gain weight.

It is not the first time that Riquelme and the club's candidacy have resonated in the media. Around April 2021, the Spaniard tried to run for election, but due to the short time he was given to present a proposal, he could not proceed.

Since criticism and the desire for a change in leadership began, Riquelme's name has regained strength, and Florentino knows it.

In fact, at the same news conference, the 79-year-old president confronted him, calling him 'the gentleman with a Mexican accent' and saying that if he thought they were a dictatorship and wanted change, he would be waiting for him in the elections.

And although time passed and Riquelme, along with his team, assured at a news conference at the VII International Forum of Expansion that they were rushing as much as they could to present a proposal that would convince the members of Real Madrid, nothing changed until this Saturday.

After days of uncertainty, Enrique Riquelme finally made public his candidacy for the presidency of Real Madrid. The executive president of Grupo Cox presented his intention to run to the electoral board, with prior notice as required by the norm.

Riquelme, in words collected by Marca, said that his decision to run is not to attack anyone; it is simply for the well-being of Real Madrid.

He also clarified that, together with his team, they have developed a serious project for the club, described as something exciting both athletically and socially, and assured that all fans will be delighted.

"I ask the members not to be afraid, to have the courage to listen to us... Ours is a project thinking in the short, medium, and long term. When the Electoral Board officially names us candidates, we will be available 24/7 to explain all the projects."

Now that a candidate has taken the courage to challenge Florentino's mandate, Real Madrid will have a deadline ending June 7 to decide whether the current president continues or they allow a new mind to rebuild the club.
