Enrique Riquelme is considering running against Florentino Pérez in the Real Madrid presidential elections, but has not yet presented his proposal.
Last week, Real Madrid's president, Florentino Perez, gave an impromptu press conference where he spoke about various topics, including making it clear that he would hold new elections.
The 79-year-old president was very upset with the press during the conference, so much so that he abruptly assured the press that he would not resign from his position and would call elections.
"I have made the decision to call elections, which my Board of Directors and I are going to run in, because an absurd situation has been created, provoked by campaigns against the interests of Real Madrid and against me," Florentino said.
The Spaniard also made it clear that, although this season there were no favorable results, sports are like that, and that the media only took advantage of the situation to personally attack him and discredit what he has already built.
Given the president's decision to call elections, a candidate emerged: the 37-year-old Spaniard Enrique Riquelme.
Although Riquelme has not yet confirmed whether he will run, he recently assured that he is working on it.
Speaking at the VII International Forum of Expansion, Riquelme assured that despite the short time he has, his objective will be to put together a project that convinces Real Madrid's members, something that has not been seen since 2006.
"There is a moral and ethical obligation for Real Madrid members who are lucky enough to be able to step forward and expose something that can make sense, that can be exciting, and take a step forward," he assured.
According to information gathered by SPORT, this would not be the first time Riquelme has tried to run for election, as he had already tried in April 2021, but due to a lack of time to present his proposal, he withdrew.
Now it seems to be the same story, because with three days left until the candidacy deadline, the businessman has still not presented his proposal to the Real Madrid Electoral Board.
Given the rumors about a possible opponent, Florentino also offered his opinion at the aforementioned press conference.
"That gentleman (Enrique Riquelme) who talks to the electricity companies and who has a South American accent, let him run. Mexican accent. They say that we are very bad, that we are a dictatorship. Let this gentleman we are talking about run, and anyone else who wants to."
Time is running out for the Spanish businessman if he decides to compete against Florentino, and if the elections do take place, Real Madrid would have until June 7 to hold them.
