Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Real Madrid player is expected to leave the club as a free agent in the summer.
After two unsuccessful seasons, Real Madrid are expected to undergo some changes in the upcoming summer transfer window. It is quite clear that the current squad is not good enough to be competing with the very best, either in Spain or in Europe.
Real Madrid are out of the Champions League. They put in a brilliant effort away in Bavaria but ultimately, were knocked out by Bayern Munich.
Of course, there will be a ton of talk about Eduardo Camavinga's red card. And understandably so. But from what we have seen so far this season, the exit was not a surprise.
In order to strengthen the squad, Real Madrid might need to say goodbye to a few players first, though.
The defence could look very different come next season. And one player who looks to be on his way out is David Alaba.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Alaba is expected to leave Real Madrid as a free agent. Several clubs have already approached the Austrian defender.
Alaba is set to be out of contract at Real Madrid at the end of this season. And it appears that Los Blancos are ready to let him walk when his deal does expire.
Alaba was one of the most important players for Real Madrid in the past. But those days seem far gone. This season, the Austrian has started just three of their La Liga games.
That should tell you everything you need to know about Alaba's place in the pecking order at Real Madrid.
Alaba is not the only Real Madrid centre-back who could be on his way out of the club either. Antonio Rudiger's contract runs out at the end of the season as well.
Rudiger has had his injury problems as well. But when available, the German has been a nailed-on starter for Real Madrid. The same cannot be said about Alaba, who has been phased out of the starting XI.
The four-time Champions League winner is still just 33 years of age though. So, it looks like there could be a decent bit of interest in his signature this summer.
After so many injuries over the past few years, Alaba cannot be expected to be the player that he once was. So, wherever he ends up next, the expectations need to be realistic.
At this point in his career, Alaba can be an excellent veteran presence for many teams across Europe. But he is not someone who will fix a defence on his own anymore.
