The longstanding Real Madrid president made a huge announcement when addressing the media on Thursday night ahead of the elections this weekend
As you will all be aware by now, Real Madrid will hold presidential elections this Sunday, where people will vote to either keep longstanding president Florentino Perez in his role, or elect outside Enrique Riquelme into the job.
There have been a lot of words from both candidates so far, as you would expect. On Wednesday night, Riquelme made a promise that, if elected, he would sign Rodri and Erling Haaland from Manchester City, as well as promising the club would never be sold to external investors. He said if either of these promises were broken, he would may the membership fees of all 100,000 Real Madrid members.
Well, tonight, Perez has gone above and beyond. Indeed, as when addressing the media on Thursday (the 4th of June) evening, he said that next Tuesday, he will make a €150m offer for a player.
He also provided several hints, as aggregated by Madrid Xtra. He said that the player: Is not from the Premier League, plays for a Champions League Club, is Galactico level, and is a midfielder.
Meanwhile, Perez also stated that the player is young. He then denied it is Michael Olise of Bayern Munich - more on that later. COPE are reporting that the 150 million Euros bid is simply the opening bid, and he is ready to go above that fee if it is necessary.
In the aftermath, Arancha Rodriguez has said: "From what they've told me it's Joao Neves, but I don't have it 100% confirmed yet." Then, in another twist, to go back to the earlier talking point, Jose Felix Diaz is reporting that - although Perez denied interest in the player - he considers Olise a game changer, and the player is not ruled out.
The journalist states that the signing is one off Olise, Neves, or Vitinha. Essentially, anything that relates to Neves, also relates to Vitinha. They are both world class midfield players, playing in the Champions League, and not competing in the Premier League.
That said, if we are being really picky, at 26, you could argue that Vitinha does not class as a young player anymore. Though that could also apply to 24 year old Olise to a lesser extent. I guess it depends on what your definition of young is. Well, and whatever Perez's definition is, more importantly. Let's see what happens. Very exciting stuff all round.
