Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the next Real Madrid signing, as Jose Mourinho will bring in the Chelsea player after the World Cup.
This is a move that has come out of almost nowhere. It had looked like Real Madrid were focusing on other areas of the pitch.
There has been all this talk about trying to sign players like Michael Olise and Julian Alvarez in recent weeks. But instead, they have silently moved for a left-back.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. He has given the move the famous 'Here we go'.
The verbal agreement is in place between all parties, on the player's side too. He is the left-back wanted by Jose Mourinho
Cucurella will leave Chelsea and join Real Madrid after representing Spain at the World Cup.
This is a deal that not many would have seen coming. Yes, there had been some rumours about Real Madrid being interested in Cucurella. But all the talk had been about either FC Barcelona or Atletico Madrid being more serious.
It is quite clear that Real Madrid have been working silently in the background and they have gotten the deal over the line.
It could be an excellent signing for Real Madrid. On his day, Cucurella is one of the best left-backs in world football.
We saw last season how he completely locked down Lamine Yamal when Chelsea beat Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League.
In the last six months, Cucurella's performances have not been up to his usual standards. But it is quite possible that he had his mind set on a move away already following the departure of Enzo Maresca as Chelsea manager.
One cannot overlook the Barcelona factor either. Cucurella did come through the La Masia youth ranks.
At the international level, Cucurella has been a standout performer for Spain for quite some time as well.
He was key to their success at EURO 24 and is expected to be a nailed-on starter this summer as well as they look to make their mark at the World Cup. After that, he will make the move to Santiago Bernabeu.
Cucurella is also just 27 years of age. He might not even have entered his prime yet. And if he manages to do that in a Real Madrid jersey, he will go down as one of the integral parts of this next era for the club.
It is very clear what Mourinho wants this summer. He wants proven quality. Players like Cucurella and Ibrahima Konate, who have been there and done that at the very highest level.
