After a very entertaining UEFA Champions League game at the Bernabeu, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has claimed that his side deserved more against Real Madrid.
On Tuesday evening, Real Madrid got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to the ideal start, with a 2-1 win at home to Jose Mourinho’s former side Inter Milan at the Bermabeu.
By ideal, that is referring to getting all three points and putting pressure on the other top teams who will also be hoping to finish in the top eight and avoid having to play an extra two games in the play off round played in February.
Because it is safe to say to anybody who watched the game, the performance was not ideal. Far from it in fact. It really was a game that could have gone either way.
Early on in the game, Thibaut Courtois was forced into a save to deny Marcus Thuram, and there was another opportunity for the visitors to take the lead. Then, one individual mistake from the Serie A outfit and Real Madrid had the lead.
Less than 10 minutes later, it would be 2-0 thanks to an even more egregious mistake, as Federico Valverde genuinely tackled Josep Martinez in the Inter goal. All whilst they continued to look dangerous going forward themselves.
So, overall it was certainly a complicated game where the visitors played well and can perhaps feel aggrieved that they will be returning back to Milan empty handed with nothing to show for it.
Well, Inter striker Lautaro Martinez certainly thinks so anyway. Indeed so, as (via MadridUniversal) he said after the game: “made two mistakes in the first few minutes. I think we didn't deserve to lose. We did much more than Real Madrid in this match.”
Some may say these are bitter comments, but you must understand the point of view of someone who has a microphone shoved under their nose after a high intensity game. There will always be plenty of emotion involved.
Plus, he has a point. Even some Real Madrid players have said themselves that it could have been a draw, so it is not something outlandish and completely deluded to say. You take his point, it is not an out of touch comment to make.
Still, performances can get better, the most important thing was to get three points and the team did that. The two extra games against Benfica last season were far from ideal, on and off the pitch, so avoiding the play offs would be very handy for Mourinho and his side.
