Former Real Madrid goalkeeper and club legend, Iker Casillas, has come under large criticism from the fanbase for reposting a tweet that made fun of modern day icon, Cristiano Ronaldo.
When there is an extended international break, there is always plenty to talk about. And so it proved. It looked as if Manchester City being found guilty of 114 charges would be the biggest talking point, but indeed it instead proved to be Real Madrid legend, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Having started in Portugal's opening UEFA Nations League game with Wales, Ronaldo was then an unused sub for the second game against Norway, which caused him to storm out of the national team camp at 41 years of age.
The situation has still yet to be resolved, with the player releasing an incredibly long statement on his Instagram page on Tuesday evening, where he attempted to make his points clear.
There has been a lot of fun made of Ronaldo in recent days and weeks. It is hard to argue with a lot of it. This is the definition of the phrase 'going out sad'. It was never meant to end like this.
Well, a lot of the jokes and posts made at his expense have been from fans on social media. Which you expect. Tribalism, bias, all of that. And, as mentioned there, he has brought it on himself.
But what you don't expect to see, is former high level professional footballers joining in the laughter at and criticism of Ronaldo. Especially not from someone who played with him for seven years.
However, that has turned out to be the case. Indeed so, as Real Madrid legend, and team mate of Ronaldo's for six years between 2009 and 2015, Iker Casillas, has reposted a tweet laughing at the Portuguese forward.
The tweet shows a video of Ronaldo revealing some of the goals he has in his career, before being beaten to them. For example, an interview where he says that golden boots hold more value than the Ballon d'Or, because they don't depend on votes. The video then cuts to Lionel Messi with his six golden boots (Ronaldo won four).
Then, the video shows Ronaldo saying that winning the World Cup is a dream, before cutting to Messi kissing the World Cup trophy in 2022. The next clip shows him saying he wants to most Ballon d'Ors in history, before cutting to Messi with eight (Ronaldo has five).
Next, he responds to comments from Xavi saying that Messi is the best player in the world, by dismissing his views as irrelevant because he plays in the Middle East. The video then cuts him to signing with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
Finally, to finish off, a clip of Ronaldo saying he is the best player in history is shown, before cutting to a goal Messi scores where Ronaldo is trying to tackle him but can't.
IMAGO / Cordon Press/Miguelez Sports The video then ends with a quick compilation of Messi on the pitch as well some trophy lifts. It does not take a genius to understand the motivation behind the video and its merits.
Liking a tweet accidently can happen. It only takes one click. Reposting (retweeting) a tweet is more conscious however. You have to press a button to do so and then another to confirm. That does not happen by chance. Plus, the repost is still there hours later. If it was accidental, he would have quickly undone it.
There has been a lot said about Casillas' behaviour in the past. We all know about the falling out with Jose Mourinho. We know a lot of people think he was too nice to the Spanish FC Barcelona players, and so on and so forth.
Several Real Madrid fans do not like the 45-year old for this reason, and with this repost, he will have only given himself more 'haters' in the fanbase. This is even further becoming the case with Thibaut Courtois' consistent performances on the pitch year in year out, with a lot of Madridstas saying he has already surpassed Casillas.
