Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa recently commented on who he will back for the second leg against Bayern Munich, but the fans might disagree with his opinion.
Real Madrid had some obvious problems during the first leg of their quarterfinal tie against Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The sloppy passing and missed chances are still haunting the fans and players as they prepare to travel to Munich next week, hoping to turn around the 2-1 deficit at the Allianz Arena.
Los Blancos would definitely take a closer look at all the things that went wrong during the first half of the game, and as it seems, the left-back position has been a matter of concern for the Merengues for some time now, as Alvaro Carreras was always on the back foot against Bayern's Michael Olise.
Carreras' misplaced pass eventually led to the visitors' opening goal of the night, scored by Luiz Diaz, which again was carried forward by Olise before he passed the ball to Serge Gnabry, who threaded the through ball to Diaz.
Although as it seems, Los Blancos' manager Alvaro Arbeloa would back the former Benfica man despite his lackluster performance during the first leg as Fabrizio Romano quoted Arbeloa's comments on his social media handle which read: "Alvaro Carreras is a fantastic player, one of the best full-backs in the world; I fully trust him, and he’ll learn from this."
As it stands, the Real Madrid manager would most likely start Carreras ahead of fellow Spaniard Fran Garcia during the second leg of the tie in Munich despite the 23-year-old getting bamboozled at times by Olise at the Bernabeu.
Ferland Mendy, the more experienced option in that position, could also recover from his injury just in time for the return leg, giving Arbeloa options to choose from, but it would also make it harder for him to choose one over the other two.
Barring Mendy, who is currently going through a season plagued by injury, as the Frenchman made only five appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos this campaign, both Carreras and Garcia have failed to impress the Bernabeu faithful, despite the former being the starting left back under both Xabi Alonso and now Arbeloa.
Garcia gave a pretty impressive performance during the second leg of the Round-of-16 tie against Manchester City, as Carreras was sidelined with a calf injury sustained during the first leg.
But once he was fit to play, Garcia once again found himself in the substitutes list as Carreras was brought back into starting eleven against both Mallorca and Bayern as the Whites lost both the games by 2-1 and now with the manager still backing the newcomer, Madridistas now can only hope that the player would be able to get back to his best against the German side during the return leg.
