According to recent reports from the Spanish media, Real Madrid first team players want a change to how the captains armband works at the club
Needless to say, it has been an absolutely insane week for everyone involved with Real Madrid.
There are a number of things that have happened during this week, despite there not having been a game until later on today, but no doubt that the most dramatic event was the physical fight between midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde.
Now, with Dani Carvajal set to depart the club this summer, with everything but the official confirmation in place, Valverde is set to become the full time captain next season.
As per the club's ruling, the longest serving player automatically becomes the skipper. The Uruguayan international joined the club in the summer of 2018, alongside Thibaut Courtois and Vinicius. However, when Carvajal has been out of the team this season, the 27-year old has had the armband, so we can assume he is first choice captain ahead of the other two players.
This has been Los Blancos' philosophy for a long time now. But, it appears as if it the players are not happy with it. Indeed, as Spanish media outlet Diario AS are reporting that the players disagree with this ruling, and instead want the club to hold a voting process to decide the captains.
Certainly a very interesting report. Although it is club tradition to let the longest serving player be captain, it does seem like a fair challenge from the players. No doubt this has come to wake due to the incident between Valverde and Tchouameni.
Is it a good look for the number eight to be skipper after what happened this week? Probably not. In general, it feels like he is a leader. He is a very passionate player, fills in in multiple positions and is generally pretty consistent with his performance level.
However, he is clearly a volatile character at the same time. What would Tchouameni think of him being handed the captaincy after this week's events? What about other players who may have sided with the Frenchman?
If there is instead a team vote, then you will get the general consensus preferred option to have the armband. Sure, there would likely be some who disagree, but at least you would have the most popular option no matter who it is.
Certainly one to keep an eye on. We know that Florentino Perez is a very proud man, so perhaps he will not want to deviate from something that has been in place for so long, but we shall see.
