According to fresh reports out of the media on Friday (the 3rd of July 2026), Real Madrid have opted against signing Enzo Fernandez for a specific reason.
Earlier on today (Friday, the 3rd of July), Real Madrid officially released a public statement distancing themselves from rumours regarding the potential signing of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who has been heavily linked with the club in recent weeks in months.
As recently as yesterday, the player's agent, Javier Pastore, gave interviews to two Madrid based outlets in MARCA and Diario AS, saying that it was time for his client to leave Chelsea, and that they would be very interested in a move to Real Madrid.
So, the club decided enough was enough, and wanted to make it clear to the public consciousness that they would not be signing Fernandez this summer, despite the player being keen on the switch.
This has lead to some wondering: Why do they not want to sign the player? A lot of people have said that Los Blancos have missed a controlling midfielder since the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the past couple of years.
Well, it appears as if we have our answer. Indeed, as it being reported by Ramon Alvarez that the returning Jose Mourinho wants to build his midfield around Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde, and the Argentine international is not seen as compatible with those two.
That is quite interesting, considering that Fernandez is seen as an immobile midfielder that needs legs around him to allow him to thrive. Well, with those two players and the current midfield set up in general, you feel like there are the physical profiles that will allow him to do what he is best at.
However, looking at it from another angle, it does perhaps make sense. When Chelsea signed the 25-year old from Benfica back in January of 2023, they thought they were getting a tempo controller, a deep lying playmaker who could dictate the pace of the game.
In the three 1/2 years since, that has not been the case. If anything, Fernandez has built a reputation in the final third, managing to consistently box crash and contribute with goals and assists.
So, considering that, at his best, this is something that Bellingham does very, very well, perhaps the club and Mourinho feel like he would get in the way of the Englishman. Then, when you consider how expensive the operation would be - likely north of 100 million Euros - it does, overall, make sense to leave this particular deal.
