Ferran Torres scores a brace on debut as PSG salvages a 2-2 draw at Rennes. The Spanish forward rescues a point in the Ligue 1 opener.
Anyone who has been watching Paris Saint-Germain for a few years knows that unexpected things happen, almost as if they had already been written beforehand, just like what happened in the 2-2 draw against Rennes on Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season, in which new signing Ferran Torres scored a brace.
Luis Enrique’s PSG started the season in a difficult manner, to say the least, when they visited Stade Rennais at Roazhon Park on Sunday, Aug. 23, for the opening matchday of the French championship.
The Parisians drew 2-2, but for a large stretch of the match, specifically during the first 71 minutes, the Parisians were trailing. The home side opened the scoring through a goal from Polish midfielder Sebastian Szymanski in the ninth minute, before making it 2-0 in the 38th minute with a goal from French forward Esteban Lepaul.
In any case, we don't want to focus too much on what happened during the match, but rather on Ferran Torres’ first league game in France after his transfer to the Parisian side from Barcelona for 50 million euros.
Ferran was not a starter; however, he replaced Ousmane Dembélé in the 46th minute. Dembélé had a frankly terrible match, with zero shots on target and only one shot that went wide.
Ferran came on and, in his final numbers, we can see he shot twice on target and scored both times.
So, not only did Torres, 26, score his first goal for PSG, but he also scored his first brace.
Spain’s hero at the 2026 World Cup then became PSG’s hero on Sunday, rescuing at least one point from what looked like it would be a scoreless result after the home team’s strong start to the match.
We started by explaining that it is common for things at PSG to seem prewritten, and just as with Dembélé before he was signed from Barcelona, fans in general had low expectations for Torres.
Most preferred younger options to replace Gonçalo Ramos, who left for AC Milan, such as Bournemouth’s Elie Junior Kroupi.
However, according to reports, Enrique was clear: he wanted Torres on his team. Well, not only did he play, but he played well and surprised.
It remains to be seen whether this is the beginning of a very positive adventure for the Spaniard at Enrique’s PSG, but at least he got off to the best possible start.
