This morning, Saturday the 15th of August, we saw PSG finally officially announce the signing of FC Barcelona and Spain national team forward, Ferran Torres.
Earlier on today (Saturday the 15th), PSG gave us what we had all been patiently waiting for - the official confirmation that Ferran Torres had been signed from Spanish side FC Barcelona.
This move sees Torres reunite with manager Luis Enrique, whom he had worked with for the Spain national team, working together both at Euro 2020 across Europe and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
One thing to note is that the Spaniard will not be available for the Trophee des Champions clash with RC Lens on Sunday evening, as he will not be registered in time, but he should be available for the Ligue 1 opener against Rennes next weekend, where he will have had a week's training with the team.
Having previously worked with Enrique, he may need less time to settle in than other players. He will also know Fabian Ruiz very well, having both played together at national team level for a number of years now. Having fellow Spanish speakers always helps off the pitch too.
The reported fee for Torres is said to be 50 million Euros, with PSG taking advantage of the fact he only had one year remaining on his contract at Barcelona. Despite that contractual situation, this feels like a very, very good deal when you consider some of the fees in football these days.
A very sensible replacement for Goncalo Ramos, who left the club to join Italian giants AC Milan, after three years in the French capital. The 26-year old is a much more versatile player too, capable of playing on either flank - as he often did under Enrique with Spain - as well as leading the line.
There will be hope that AFC Ajax and Belgium national team winger Mika Godts will be confirmed too, as a replacement for the potentially outgoing Bradley Barcola, who continues to be linked with Premier League side Liverpool, though it sounds like he may play a part against Lens, so that is certainly something for us all to keep an eye on.
All in all, an exciting and also smart signing for PSG, as they continue to bolster their squad. Although the team has won back to back UEFA Champions League titles, they say that to stand still in football is to move backwards, so it always good to keep the squad fresh and keep improving.
