Luis Enrique says PSG are not yet at their best despite topping Ligue 1, praising his substitutes after a win over Lyon and dedicating the victory to injured Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Currently, Paris Saint-Germain is in first place in Ligue 1 thanks to Monday's win against Olympique Lyonnais (2-0); however, for coach Luis Enrique, the club is still not in its best form.
PSG struggled early in the season to regain the rhythm they carried over from last season. The club bought new players and lost others, so they couldn't match last year's precision.
But after three matches without a win, the club began to play faster, and the new players increasingly adapted to the style. As of today, the Parisians are on an eight-match unbeaten streak.
Sadly, several key players were injured during the last matches, namely Nuno Mendes, Marquinhos, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Ousmane Dembele. That is why the coach resorted to a different eleven for the match against Lyon, and, in fact, the substitutes from that starting eleven led the team to victory.
Monday's match started slowly. The Rouge et Bleu tried but couldn't score, and only in the second half did things look better for PSG; they managed two goals, one from young Senny Mayulu and another from the club's new addition, Mika Godts.
At the post-match press conference, Luis Enrique discussed the substitutes and their importance to the match. He believes the substitutes deserve more playing time, and he is always glad when they score instead of the starters, which demonstrates their mental strength and qualities.
"It is very important that they show their level; we also have to include Lucas Beraldo and Lucas Hernandez. They deserve it because they deserve more playing minutes. I am especially happy for them. I would like to dedicate this win to Kvara. We are very proud of him. We remain motivated as a team. But this win is for Kvara."
Regarding the abilities of the new addition, Godts, the Spaniard reflected on the young man's ambition and advised him to stay calm and think things through more before acting.
"He is an ambitious player with many qualities. He started with great enthusiasm, wanting to dribble past the second player before the first. Things do not work that way. He put too much pressure on himself. We have placed a lot of trust in him. We signed him for the long term. He needs to keep calm and composed," Luis Enrique reflected.
Lastly, Luis Enrique discussed PSG's current level. The coach acknowledged that they still have a long way to go, since they are just beginning the season and several players are injured, so it is understandable that they aren't at 100%.
"We are a reliable and resilient team, and we are always competitive. We can win or lose, but we always aim to win. This isn't the moment to be at 100%. I don't want us at 100% right now. This is our usual rhythm, but we want to be at 100% around April, more or less," the Spaniard concluded.
