Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered a torn ACL in PSG's 4-2 Champions League win over FC Barcelona, and several players came out to wish him a speedy recovery.
On Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain faced FC Barcelona (4-2) in a Champions League group stage match, and although the Parisian team managed to beat them, they lost a very important player in the process.
The match was intense and physically demanding, as noted by players and coaches from both teams, with the Rouge et Bleu being the most affected.
Early in the second half, PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had to come off in the 59th minute with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, one of the worst nightmares a football player can experience.
The anterior cruciate ligament is key to knee function, providing stability by controlling braking movements and sudden turns, which is why Kvaratskhelia will need extensive therapy to regain strength and stability.
This type of major injury requires surgical intervention, and the healing and recovery process usually takes 9 to 12 months, depending on the injury's severity and his response to rehabilitation, so he is effectively out of competition for the rest of the season.
The news devastated the Georgian, who was rested and in good form to continue supporting PSG in its league and Champions League commitments. In fact, he posted a moving social media statement asking, 'Why me?' which devastated fans.
In the post, the 25-year-old player laments having prepared in vain for the match against Barcelona, but he is willing to spend months working hard to return to doing what he is passionate about.
The message is harsh, but in the world of football, there is also companionship. Khvicha's teammates quickly stepped up with messages of encouragement and positivity.
His former club, Napoli, and former teammates, including Gianluigi Donnarumma and Kang In Lee, expressed their support and good wishes on social media.
The PSG locker room also showed great solidarity with messages such as "We are with you, brother! Stay strong," from Achraf Hakimi, or "Stay strong, my brother, you will come back stronger, God is with you," from Desire Doue.
But they were not the only ones: Illya Zabarnyi, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Marquinhos, and countless squad teammates flooded the Georgian with good wishes.
The messages of support stayed within the team, but PSG No. 7 also received messages from players on other teams. Even football legend Cristiano Ronaldo took the time to share an emotional message on Khvicha's Instagram account.
"The hardest battles in football are often the ones nobody sees. I know that feeling, Kvara. But never forget what brought you this far, and don't let a difficult moment make you doubt how far you can go. Keep that fire on. Your best is still to come," Ronaldo wrote.
Kvaratskhelia will face a long, painful recovery, and meanwhile PSG will have to find a way to replace the Georgian for the club's upcoming important commitments. Let us hope his recovery is successful and positive.
