Matvey Safonov made eight saves in PSG's title-clinching win at Lens. 'I was lucky that they didn't shoot where I couldn't stop the ball,' he said.

If PSG won against Lens on Wednesday night, it owes a great deal to Matvey Safonov, who made eight saves on the night. The Russian goalkeeper spoke to the press after the game to praise his teammates.

On Wednesday, PSG saw Safonov turn in an impressive performance. Back in goal after having let Renato Marin play the last two Ligue 1 matches, the Russian international made no fewer than eight saves against Lens.

When he was beaten, his goalpost saved him. Thanks to his multiple saves and goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ibrahim Mbaye (0-2), PSG officially secured its French league title, its fifth in a row and the 14th in club history. On beIN SPORTS, Safonov spoke, in perfect French, about his XXL performance.

"My best match of the season? Personally, I don't know. Normally, for me, the most important thing is that we won today. The other things are just a bonus for me today. I prefer not to choose just one match," he said.

Safonov took the opportunity to praise his teammates and remind them that the season does not end until May 30, the day of the Champions League final against Arsenal in Budapest.

"I think that normally, the whole team, all the players on my team, had a magnificent season in Ligue 1. For us, it's not over. It will end on May 30. Until that moment, we have a lot of focus. That is our path, which is not easy. We know that."

The Russian player also acknowledged that he had a bit of luck, as no shot from Lens went in a direction he couldn't reach.

"The secret to my success? There is no secret. In my opinion, today my saves were lucky; they didn't shoot to the side where I couldn't have stopped the ball. I think the opponent gave me a little bit of luck. And I used that," he explained.
