According to reports from the French media, a PSG first team player is set to begin negotiations to have his contract at the Parc Des Princes terminated.
In the summer of 2022, PSG made the signing of Renato Sanches from fellow Ligue 1 side Lille, making him one of two Portuguese midfield signings that summer, alongside Vitinha.
Safe to say, their careers in the French capital could not have gone any differently at all. After just one season, and a total of 914 minutes played across all competitions, he was loaned out to Serie A side, AS Roma the following summer.
Then, after a pretty nondescript time in Italy, with just 12 appearances, he was loaned back to Benfica, the club where he had started his career. After another uneventful season, with 18 appearances, he was loaned out for a third consecutive summer this time last year, joining Greek side Panathinaikos. After just 18 appearances and 1124 minutes over in Greece, he re-joined PSG this summer.
There have been no clubs in talks to sign him on yet another loan this summer, so technically speaking he remains a PSG player as it stands. However, it looks like that could change very soon.
Indeed so, as it is being reported by French media outlet Onze Mondial (via PSG_Report) that the club and Sanches are likely to begin contract termination talks soon. They state that the midfielder has not received any concrete offers this summer, implying that the best option for all parties is to terminate his contract 10 months or so early.
Well, pretty much sums up the signing, when the best thing to do is terminate his deal the year before it expires. Feels like the sensible thing to do. PSG get him off the books, and he can try to somehow restart his career again. Other clubs may be willing to take a punt on him as a free agent, when they otherwise wouldn't have.
Where that may be, who even knows. He has already tried the homecoming with Benfica, and as mentioned earlier, it did not work out. Perhaps the next move is somewhere like MLS, or Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc etc. Somewhere where he can just 'secure the bag' for want of a better phrase, whilst playing at a much easier standard of football.
Fortunately, the club do finally appear to have learned from these horrendous, waste of money signings. As shown by signing Vitinha in the same window. Let’s certainly hope so anyway. There have been some duds since then, especially in 2023, but they are becoming less frequent now, fortunately.
