Despite a statement victory over FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, the night proved to be a bitter one for PSG, with star winger, Kvhicha Kvaratskhelia picking up a brutal injury.

On Tuesday night, PSG saw off La Liga Champions FC Barcelona with a 4-2 win at the Parc Des Princes, ending the visitors 11 game winning streak to begin the season, in what was - as expected - a fantastic game of football.

However, this was a win that came at a great cost, and sadly, it is not a night that will be looked back on fondly by anyone of a PSG persuasion.

Indeed not, as PSG have this morning (Wednesday, the 21st of October) confirmed that superstar winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ruptured his ACL in his right knee during the win. He will now undergo surgery, and his 26/27 season is almost certainly now over, barring a miracle.

Before we get into what this means for the team as a collective, let’s just think of Kvaratskhelia. Just absolutely gutting. One moment you are playing against Barcelona in the Champions League, and the next your season is (most likely) over in October. Absolutely devastating.

You just hope that he could be back in July time so he can get a full pre season behind him. If he doesn’t return to training or whatnot until August, September time then he is playing catch up from minute one. It’s a nightmare scenario to come back from an ACL injury and not have a pre season behind you.

It is not just PSG who suffer from this either. Euro 2028 qualifying will start in March. Some teams will start in June depending on their UEFA Nations League campaign, but either way, Kvaratskhelia is set to miss at least two, perhaps four very important qualifiers with the Georgia national team.

The Georgians qualified for Euro 2024, but through a technicality via the Nations League (finished fourth in actual qualifying) and with their poor performance in that competition this time round, they won’t have that safety next to fall back on this time round. So, losing their star man is an absolute hammer blow.

There will be qualifiers in the autumn of next year too, which with all being well the 25-year old will be available for, but it could be too little too late by then. We shall have to wait and see.

We will get to the analysis of how PSG cope and prepare for life without Kvaratskhelia this season, but for now, it felt right to just talk about him, and the loss he will be for PSG and the Georgia national team. Get well soon, Kvara.
