Pundit warns PSG not to overhype Ferran Torres. Debut brace doesn't make him a leader yet, says Walid Acherchour.
PSG should not get too excited about Ferran Torres, as he does not currently have the level of a major attacking player for the French capital club, according to a pundit.
For his debut with the PSG jersey on his back, Ferran Torres struck very hard. Coming on at Rennes when his team was trailing 2-0, the Spanish striker scored a brace to salvage things on the very first matchday.
A necessarily convincing debut, and one that will bring about the headache that coaches dream of, with several players fighting for a starting spot.
In the wake of his fine season with FC Barcelona and his famous goal in the World Cup final, Ferran Torres is walking on water. But he should beware the comedown, warns Walid Acherchour.
In a recent RMC intervention, the pundit said the Spanish striker is not a goal machine and does not necessarily have the stature of an attacking leader for PSG.
“I find that Ferran Torres’ trajectory since his goal in the World Cup final is starting to take on proportions that are too big relative to the player he is,” said Acherchour, who does not want his goal in the World Cup final to suddenly make him a huge player.
“Since then, he’s become a media star. In the United States, you get the impression that the guy has become Ronaldo Nazario. Scoring a goal in a World Cup final changes his dimension. Now, we must not change our perception of the player he is. For me, he remains a very good move for PSG. It’s a better profile than Goncalo Ramos in relation to what Luis Enrique wants. But to hand the keys of PSG’s attack to Ferran Torres, you’ll have to show me the tape of certain matches that he’ll win for you the way Ousmane Dembele or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have done. For now, I don’t have the footage,” the After Foot contributor said.
In other news, Ousmane Dembele is not leaving PSG and is set to extend his contract. Talks are ongoing for a one or two-year deal, according to RMC.
Fabrice Hawkins says Dembele will not sign a big extension, but everyone already seems to agree on the terms of the future contract.
“PSG still wants to extend Dembele. The idea is to extend his contract by one or two years, that is, until 2029 or 2030. Negotiations with his entourage have been ongoing for several months, with no particular concern in Paris: the player and the club are aligned on continuing the adventure. The discussions will resume after the transfer window,” he reported.
