After last night's win in the FIFA World Cup final for PSG's Fabian Ruiz, we take a closer look at his quite incredible season over the last 12 months or so.
You may have noticed last night that PSG star Fabian Ruiz and his Spain side won their second FIFA World Cup by defeating Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 final in New Jersey, after extra time.
Having had to wait a few games to get back into the side, Ruiz was named in the starting XI throughout the latter stages, and played 62 minutes against Argentina in the final.
After this win, Ruiz ends the season with a Ligue 1 title, a UEFA Champions League title, and a World Cup, having also won a treble and a European Championship in the two years prior.
This victory also means that, in all 50 of his appearances for the Spanish national team, Ruiz has never lost a game, with the 2025 UEFA Nations League final officially classed as a draw.
So, in seven years representing Spain, the midfielder has won three trophies (the 2023 Nations League, 2024 Euros and 2026 World Cup), whilst losing zero games at the same time. A truly incredible feat. He has also scored seven goals in that time, perhaps none so more important than the opening goal against Belgium in the quarter finals of this year's tournament.
Over the long six weeks or so of this tournament, there has also been the news emerging that Ruiz has extended his contract at PSG until 2029, with a further option of another year too, great news.
Having missed a lot of last season through injury, Luis Enrique will be hoping that his compatriot can stay fit a bit more consistently next season, with just 22.4 90's completed across all competitions last season. Fortunately, he was fit enough for the Champions League semi finals, and put in a masterclass against Bayern Munich in the second leg at the Allianz Arena.
It is quite funny how football works out sometimes. For the 2022 FIFA World Cup, then Spain manager Enrique did not actually select Ruiz in his final 26 man squad for the tournament. Since then, he has won everything at club level under Enrique, and everything at national team level too. It all works out in the end.
You wonder if this collective success - and top performances in the big games when it matters most - will be enough for a top 10 Ballon D'or finish for Ruiz? A reminder that PSG forward Ousmane Dembele is the current holder of the award.
