Both PSG and Angers face significant squad challenges, with multiple players sidelined or doubtful, which will impact their upcoming Ligue 1 clash.
Two days before the Angers vs. PSG match, on Saturday, counting toward Matchday 31 of Ligue 1, eight absences are already to be deplored, but there will probably be more, as several players are doubtful, especially on the Parisian side.
The day after the victory against Nantes (3-0), which relaunched momentum in the title race, PSG is resting and will only return to the Campus this Friday.
It is already time to look ahead to the next match, Angers vs. PSG, which is only two days away. A match that is still very manageable, and, moreover, knowing the result for Lens at Brest the day before.
For this clash between the reigning champion and the 13th-placed side, practically certain to be safe, head coach Luis Enrique will be deprived for sure of his young and versatile midfielder Quentin Ndjantou, still in his treatment protocol after his hamstring operation last February.
At this moment and pending the medical update on Friday, this is the only certain forfeit for PSG against Angers, a sign that the squad is nonetheless doing rather well.
But as PSG announced as early as Monday via a medical update, Vitinha is very doubtful for this Angers vs PSG due to inflammation in the heel of his right leg, a consequence of a knock received against Lyon last Sunday.
The Portuguese is not yet completely ruled out, and the club announced he would be reevaluated "at the end of the week," implying his presence is still possible.
Hoped for on Wednesday against Nantes, Nuno Mendes should make his return since he was already training with the group on Tuesday, the day before the match, but PSG preferred to let him recover better from his muscular concerns contracted at Liverpool the previous week.
While we will have to wait for the club's confirmation, it seems likely that Mendes will make his return this Saturday against Angers.
Beware, however, of bad surprises and small knocks, the Parisians having already played two matches in three days, and this Angers vs. PSG match, therefore, being the third in six days. For the moment, nothing has filtered out in that direction, however.
While there are between one and three injured players on the PSG side, the story is quite different on the SCO Angers side since this morning's training session saw no fewer than seven players absent.
And coach Alexandre Dujeux did not hide in a press conference that he was very pessimistic about possible returns before the match: "This weekend, barring a very good surprise, as it will come very quickly, I would be surprised if I could recover one."
For several weeks, the Angers squad has been suffering physically, and SCO already had several absentees last weekend: midfielders Yassin Belkhdim and Marius Courcoul will still not be there this Saturday, the same for forward Harouna Djibirin, while backup goalkeeper Oumar Pona got injured with the reserve team. But Angers' problems are especially one notch lower.
During the last match, Ousmane Camara had to come off at halftime while Marius Louer finished the match, but both are now in the treatment room. They did not cross paths there with fullback Carlens Arcus, who is coming out of it and is in the recovery phase, but the three defenders will not be fit this weekend to face PSG. As a result, SCO will present itself as a brand-new defense against Paris.
Angers vs. PSG: Injured, Doubtful Players
- Injured (8): Ndjantou, Belkhdim, Courcoul, Djibirin, Pona, Camara, Louer, and Arcus.
- Doubtful (2): Mendes, Vitinha.
