Luis Enrique weighs in on Hugo Ekitike's surprising resurgence as PSG prepares for a challenging Champions League game against Liverpool.
On Wednesday night, PSG will have a big test against Liverpool. It will be a special match for Hugo Ekitike, who is now succeeding with the Reds but who had difficult moments during his time in the French capital.
Paris Saint-Germain is wary of Liverpool, even if the Reds are not in the form of their lives. Luis Enrique likely has a plan in mind to get past the Mersey club on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. The Spaniard expects his players to respect their opponents and give everything to get closer to the Final Four.
Liverpool is going through a difficult period, but it intends to cause problems for PSG. That is notably the ambition of Ekitike, 23, who will experience a special return to the Parc des Princes.
Luis Enrique, A New Fan of Hugo Ekitike
Ekitike spent only a few months at PSG and barely knew Luis Enrique. The Spanish coach did not necessarily count on him and preferred to recruit Randal Kolo Muani.
Since then, the former Reims player has come a long way, making his mark at Frankfurt and then at Liverpool. Enough to spark some regret on the Parisian side? In any case, Luis Enrique spoke at a news conference about Ekitike's progression:
"After he left here, he was very good in Germany and at Liverpool. He is now an international, and he has improved a lot. He was very young when he was here; he has improved greatly. But this is not the time to talk about Liverpool's players."
Note that Vitinha also said good things about his former teammate, whose attitude is praised everywhere he goes. Still, feelings will have to be set aside on Wednesday night: no gifts will be given on either side for this clash, which already delivered on all its promises last season.
