Lucas Chevalier has decided to stay at PSG after talks with Luis Enrique. The goalkeeper was reassured and will fight to reclaim the starting spot from Matvey Safonov.
Signed from LOSC Lille last summer, Lucas Chevalier endured a very difficult first season at PSG, but he is ultimately expected to stay at the club.
Signed from Lille last summer for €40 million plus €15 million in bonuses, Lucas Chevalier was expected to succeed Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joined Manchester City after playing a major role in PSG's first UEFA Champions League title.
But the French goalkeeper, who was then France's No. 2, produced a string of hesitant performances and costly mistakes, both on and off the field.
Chevalier quickly became the target of criticism from supporters and eventually lost his place to Matvey Safonov, who finished the 2025-26 season as PSG's undisputed starter. Everything pointed toward Lucas Chevalier leaving this summer, with reports early in the transfer window linking him to clubs in Turkey and England.
Lucas Chevalier Hopes to Reclaim the Starting Job at PSG
But selling a goalkeeper who cost more than €40 million a year ago and is now worth much less is not easy, and the current trend points toward a second season for Lucas Chevalier at PSG.
According to Canal+ journalist Olivier Tallaron, the 24-year-old goalkeeper held several lengthy discussions with Luis Enrique and was reassured. Chevalier has therefore decided to stay at PSG and give himself a chance to become the No. 1 goalkeeper again.
"Lucas Chevalier is staying at PSG. The young goalkeeper held several lengthy discussions with Luis Enrique. He was reassured and decided to give himself a chance to become the No. 1 goalkeeper again," Tallaron wrote.
On June 29, Le Parisien reported that despite his difficult first season, Chevalier still had Luis Enrique's confidence and was not expected to leave, with PSG planning to keep him. The French goalkeeper had also not expressed any desire to leave. The newspaper added that his attitude, his progress, and the signs he showed during the second half of the season convinced the PSG coaching staff.
To be fair, this is good news for Paris Saint-Germain. Matvey Safonov has already proven that he is a reliable enough option for a team with ambitions of winning every major trophy, as PSG lifted the UEFA Champions League last season.
Meanwhile, Lucas Chevalier had already shown during his time at Lille and in his first few weeks at Paris Saint-Germain that he has the potential to become an elite goalkeeper.
As a result, PSG could avoid spending money on another goalkeeper and instead allocate those resources to areas of greater need, such as midfield or attack.
