Manchester United's chase for Premier League star Antoine Semenyo is seemingly over as journalists like David Ornstein and Simon Stone have reported that the winger has chosen to join United's cross-town rivals, Manchester City, when the transfer window opens.
Both clubs have been pushing for Semenyo's signing over the past few weeks, as the player had only expressed a preference for Man City or Man United amid interest from other Premier League clubs like Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea.
The Bournemouth star has netted a total of eight goals and provided three assists in 16 Premier League appearances this season, while playing as a winger for the Cherries, all of which resulted in his recent valuation of £65 million, which would be applicable only till the 10th of January.
Now, according to Ornstein's recent article in The Athletic, the 25-year-old is looking to choose Manchester City over the Reds to be his next destination, and according to various reports, the player has been attracted by City's chances of winning trophies, and also cited the opportunity to play in the Champions League as his reason to join the Cityzens.
Although with United, Semenyo could have be a key player and a regular starter under Amorin. The club management even considered playing him as a wing-back, a position the Ghanaian international had never played before.
Despite a spending spree by both clubs during the summer, they weren't likely to back out of the deal due to the player's current form, as he is probably in the prime stages of his footballing career, and the recent updates also suggest that the player has chosen City regardless of the financial side of the transfer.
United would now be looking for alternatives, such as Ruben Neves and Conor Gallagher, who are expected to be available in January and have Premier League experience, to solve their midfield problems, which have been a major drawback for Amorin this season.
Amorin now needs to find solutions to his current problems. Captain Bruno Fernandes is set to miss a few games. Bryan Mbuemo and Amad Diallo have joined their respective national teams for the AFCON. This is a major setback for the Reds in their quest for a top-four finish this season, which would likely give them leverage in future transfer windows.
