Despite a fantastic start at Manchester United, Michael Carrick's future at the club is still uncertain according to the former player.

Manchester United went four games without a win while crashing out of the FA Cup third round against Brighton, after which Michael Carrick took charge of the Reds as he had to manage the underperforming squad against Manchester City at Old Trafford in his first game in charge.

Carrick has only been signed as the interim manager for the remainder of the season, but his performances so far have convinced a major portion of the United fans to keep him permanently, as they were rightfully skeptical of his appointment earlier at the start of the year.

United currently sit at fourth in the Premier League table with 44 points in 25 games. Champions League qualification is no longer a distant dream now, but as it seems Carrick's future at Man United is not yet secure, as former Reds defender Garry Neville recently talked about his former colleague's situation at the club.

Neville recently talked about United's stance on Carrick on The Garry Neville podcast (h/t Sky Sports), saying, "They've started the process of speaking to and looking at other managers, building all the sorts of data and analysing who should be the next manager of the football club. But what they've said is they're not going to be bounced into - irrespective of wins or draws or losses on the pitch in this next couple of months - making an appointment. They're going to wait until towards the end of the season.

"If Michael then at that point makes himself available for the job, and I did actually say a couple of weeks ago, I wondered whether Michael actually would say no. He is that type of guy, Michael; he's someone who would always work in the best interest of the football club. He may do that, or he might say no, I feel comfortable enough and I've built such a good relationship with the players, his coaching staff to put his name in the hat."

The debate on this particular issue seems like a never-ending one, with the club management already looking at other options, but in the meantime, not rejecting Carrick completely for the next season, who has turned into a fan favourite after winning four back-to-back games, three of which were against the likes of Man City, Arsenal, and Tottenham.

If the Reds' management decides on bringing in a new permanent manager after the end of this season, it definitely should be someone with a successful career at big clubs like that of United, as an inexperienced and relatively young manager would be no different from Carrick in terms of experience.
