One of the standout performers of the Michael Carrick era at Manchester United so far has been central defender Harry Maguire.
The recently turned 33-year old returned from injury in a timely manner to slot straight into the heart of the United defence, firstly with Lisandro Martinez and more recently with Leny Yoro.
Owing to his recent form, England national team manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Maguire, as well as Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo, are back in contention for a Three Lions recall. None of the three players have made an international appearance since 2024.
So, it feels like there is a decent opportunity for Maguire to force his way into the picture. Particularly with the likes of John Stones continuing to miss a number of games through injury.
However, his place on the plane could be at risk, and it's got nothing to do with his current form. Indeed, as Rob Dorsett of Sky is reporting that there is a possibility the defender will be blocked from a US Visa.
The journalist said that Maguire's lawyers are "adamant" he doesn't have a criminal record or restriction on travel, despite earlier this week being convicted for minor assault and bribery. Dorsett says that appeal papers are being prepped for Supreme Court to clear his name.
We all know that the US has very strict immigration laws, where any non-US citizen must get a visa when travelling to the country. However, those with criminal convictions under the threshold of "moral terpitude" is unlikely not to be prohibited.
An interesting report for sure. It would be gutting for him to miss out on the opportunity of going to the World Cup for a non footballing issue, let alone one that happened in 2020. He has represented England at two World Cups and a European Championships. but missed out on Euro 2024 due to injury.
So, for him to suffer international tournament heartache once more would be absolutely gutting for him. Maguire was a consistent mainstay during the Gareth Southgate era, but has not played for the national team since a nations league clash with the Republic of Ireland in September 2024. That was his only cap since March 2024 under Southgate.
Certainly one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks, and perhaps months. You'd be gutted for him. You also hope it doesn't make Tuchel decide against picking him for this month's friendlies with Uruguay and Japan - knowing his defender may not be able to play at the finals anyway. Let's see.
