Aston Villa are "targeting" Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie in a potential summer "coup", with Unai Emery keen on his versatility and pressing ability. The Scot’s strong bond with John McGinn adds intrigue, though he remains a key figure in the Cherries’ European push.
Aston Villa are reportedly considering a summer move for Ryan Christie, whose deal with AFC Bournemouth runs into its final year next season, according to journalist Sébastien Vidal, the co-founder & Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Weekend Sports".
Villa boss Unai Emery is said to admire Christie’s flexibility across midfield, valuing his ability to operate both deeper and further forward. The Scot also shares a close relationship with John McGinn, having partnered him regularly under Steve Clarke for Scotland, so if McGinn remains at Villa Park, a club partnership would then potentially be on the cards.
With Christie, now 31, approaching the final 12 months of his contract, Villa are targeting what has been described as a potential "coup". His versatility and strong connection with McGinn are viewed as factors that could smooth negotiations.
Before his move to England, Christie enjoyed a productive spell with Celtic, registering 42 goals and 44 assists in 151 appearances., before making the move down to the south coast to join the Cherries.
Former Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil previously labelled the Scotland international "incredible", and Christie has remained central to the Bournemouth's push towards European contention this season.
His evolution under Andoni Iraola has been particularly striking. Since Iraola’s arrival in 2023, Christie has thrived in a high-intensity pressing system that maximises his energy, intelligence, and technical quality.
Recast as a dynamic, pressing-focused midfielder - often deployed higher or in wide areas - he has become one of Bournemouth’s most relied-upon players, amassing close to 100 appearances across three seasons.

By March 2024, he ranked among the Premier League’s top performers for pressures and ball recoveries in the middle third, forcing over 150 turnovers and contributing to numerous attacking situations through interceptions and high regains.
That influence has been reflected in his performances, with his average ratings rising notably during Iraola’s tenure. Even in the current 2025/26 campaign, where rotation has slightly reduced his output, he continues to contribute goals and maintain a key role in midfield.
Emery’s preference for adaptable players makes Christie an attractive option. He would offer both central depth and width, while adding intensity and reliability to Villa’s squad.
REUTERS/Dylan Martinez There is a clear stylistic alignment between player and manager at Bournemouth. Iraola’s aggressive, front-foot approach has unlocked Christie’s best qualities, transforming him from a creative squad option into a relentless pressing force and a near-automatic starter. His recent seasons represent the most consistent and impactful period of his time on the south coast.
Villa’s upward trajectory under Emery could make the move appealing, particularly given Christie’s connection with McGinn. It’s a situation that may develop as the summer window approaches.
However, despite the speculation, Christie appears settled at Bournemouth. He has become a cornerstone of the club’s identity - embodying their intensity and work ethic- and is viewed internally as a key figure moving forward.
Whether under Iraola or a potential future successor such as Marco Rose, Bournemouth see him as integral to their midfield structure. For a player who has found a system that perfectly suits him, the lure of a move may not outweigh the stability he currently enjoys.
