AFC Bournemouth’s Europa League trip to Sparta Prague proved hugely popular, with just 1,004 away tickets selling out within seconds when made available to supporters with 10+ points. While some fans secured their place, others are planning Prague trips without tickets as the scramble continues.
AFC Bournemouth’s Europa League trip to Sparta Prague has already become one of the hottest tickets of the season, with the club’s modest allocation of just 1,004 - selling out at lightning speed. The tickets went on sale to away points holders with 13+ points on Tuesday, before being lowered to 10+ points on Wednesday afternoon - where they sold out in seconds.
This afternoon's frantic scrabbling for tickets has left many Cherries supporters either celebrating hard-won successes or resigned to trying to watching from a pub in the Czech capital (or at home, of course).
The official club account set the scene earlier in the week, confirming ticket details for the November 5th match, asking: “Prague in November, anyone?” And this certainly got the fans salivating over a trip to Europe to a city that successful marries beautiful scenery and cheap beer - because the allocation was snapped up rapidly..
Wikimedia CommonsFan account Back Of The Net asked supporters whether they managed to grab a ticket, and reaction was mixed, with the speed of the sell-out left many stunned. One reply simply noted that “The 10+ pts just vanished in seconds!”
Those who got lucky were quick to share their excitement though.
Jason Rumens posted: “Luckily me and my son got ours , buzzing can’t wait”. Luke Ramsier was equally buzzing: “Tickets secured! Prague here we come!”
Richard J celebrated securing three: “Very tense but made it. 3 tickets secured. Meanwhile Paul Rixon added: “Yep two in the bag!”
Unlike Real Sociedad, where pretty much anyone who could go to San Sebastian did go, Prague presents more of a challenge, with Epet Arena only holding 20,000 supporters, so with the 5% UEFA allocation in mind, Cherries were only likely to get just over 1000 seats.
Just under 2000 Cherries fans watched AFCB in San Sebastian | REUTERS/Vincent WestWhilst there are still around 100 fans who are still holding out hope via a ballot, some Boscombe fans are already planning the trip regardless of being able to watch in person.
Grant said he had "already booked my flight and hotel so either way I’m there", while London Cherries simply declared: "We're on our way!"
Not everyone was so fortunate. Neil Birmingham admitted: "I tried but missed out, home end for me it is then". Sam Forrester asked the obvious question many were thinking: "Who’s bowling into the home end then?", and Will agreed, hinting at a possible Plan B: "May or may not sneak in the home end".
REUTERS/Vincent WestOther fans pointed to the frustrations of a small allocation. One supporter whose son got in with 12 points noted the disappointment for those who missed out and suggested the system can feel unfair when limited numbers are available, while hoping the club might secure a few hundred more tickets.
Amid the mix of elation and frustration, there were fans who were looking at historical factors to question whether the away numbers could be boosted, with Carl suggesting that "Sparta gave Aberdeen an extra 500 tickets last December (1500 total) in their Conference League game. It's just if someone at AFCB is going to request that..."
Either way, the rapid sell-out underlines just how far Bournemouth’s European adventure has captured the imagination of the fanbase. For those holding the precious tickets, a November night in Prague awaits. For the rest, the scramble for alternatives has already begun...
