Alex Scott’s injury is a huge blow for Bournemouth, but it could also open the door for a player who has stepped up before. With a relentless run of fixtures ahead, the Cherries could do with Lewis Cook once again stepping up and into that engine room in midfield.
There are moments in a footballer’s career when circumstances create an opportunity that simply cannot be ignored. For Lewis Cook, that moment may have arrived once again. Alex Scott’s injury is an obvious blow for Bournemouth, particularly with a demanding run of fixtures ahead, but it also leaves a sizeable void in the heart of Marco Rose’s midfield. Cook has never been short of quality, his composure, experience and ability to dictate play have been evident throughout his time on the south coast, yet consistency has perhaps been the missing piece. The classy midfielder has drifted in and out of the starting eleven over recent seasons, but the Cherries really need someone to step forward right now. Lewis has been here before, delivering when the club needed him most, and with Scott sidelined and the fixture list showing little mercy, this could be the opportunity for Cook to remind everyone exactly what he is capable of.

While Scott has undoubtedly emerged as one of the Cherries’ standout performers, Cook possesses many of the qualities that have made his younger teammate so important to the side.
Lewis' passing range can help Bournemouth move the ball through the thirds, while his tenacity in the tackle provides that bite required in the middle of the pitch. Perhaps just as importantly, Cook has the ability to carry the ball forward and drive the team up the pitch when space opens up. Lewis has showed versatility by often filling in within the backline and giving Adam Smith the odd break, but Lewis is a central midfielder and it may be his time to go grab it.
With the Cherries facing a demanding run of fixtures, those attributes could prove invaluable. Scott may currently be the star in midfield, but Cook has the experience and quality to step up, and this could be his opportunity to show it consistently.

The Cherries are far from short of options in central midfield and it still remains to be seen whether Cook will be relied on consistently. Marco Rose still has a number of players capable of stepping into different roles, offering plenty of flexibility during what promises to be a demanding period.
Tyler Adams is perhaps the most obvious option when Bournemouth require greater defensive security. His ability to break up play, cover ground and protect the back four makes him a natural candidate to anchor the midfield.
Then there is Ryan Christie, whose energy and intensity can provide the Cherries with a different dimension in the middle of the park. His willingness to press, tackle and drive the team forward remains a valuable asset.
Alex Toth is another intriguing option. The Hungarian midfielder has not yet had the opportunity to establish himself in the side, but Scott’s absence could provide the opening he has been waiting for.
And Marcus Tavernier should not be forgotten either. His versatility and technical ability have already shown that he can operate more centrally when required. Bournemouth may have lost Scott, but they certainly haven't lost their midfield options.
