AFC Bournemouth are on the brink of securing historic European football after a near-perfect weekend of Premier League results. With Andoni Iraola’s side now overwhelming favourites to qualify, the Cherries could seal a Europa League spot with a result against Manchester City.

Cherries supporters were taken on an emotional ride this weekend as the club’s dream of qualifying for European football edged tantalisingly closer following a near-perfect round of Premier League results.

With several key outcomes falling in Bournemouth's favour, optimism is rapidly building across the south coast that Andoni Iraola’s side are on the verge of completing the greatest achievement in the club’s modern history.

Manchester City’s victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup Final earlier in the weekend proved hugely significant, opening up an eighth European qualification place for Premier League clubs. That result alone gave Bournemouth fans plenty to celebrate, but the good news continued to roll in throughout Sunday.

Sunderland’s win away at Everton and Leeds United’s victory over Brighton & Hove Albion further strengthened Bournemouth’s position in the race for Europe, turning the afternoon into what many supporters described as a dream set of outcomes.

The only disappointing moment came at the GTech Community Stadium, where Brentford snatched a dramatic late draw against Crystal Palace.

Many Cherries fans had expected the Bees to take all three points, but Palace took the lead twice before Brentford fought back thanks to former Bournemouth winger Dango Ouattara, who scored twice to rescue a point for the Bees, keeping his side firmly in contention for a European place themselves.

AFC Bournemouth's Strong Position

Even so, Bournemouth remain in an incredibly strong position heading into the final stretch of the campaign. Statistical projections now reportedly place the Cherries’ chances of securing European football at an astonishing 99.66%.

For a club that has spent much of its history rattling buckets, battling financial uncertainty and lower-league football, it is a remarkable position to be in. Less than two decades ago Bournemouth were fighting for survival off the pitch, with fears over the club’s very existence. Now, they stand on the brink of competing on the European stage.

The next challenge for Iraola’s side comes against Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium in what promises to be one of the most significant nights in the club’s history. A single point against Pep Guardiola’s men would guarantee Bournemouth not only qualification for Europe, but a coveted place in the UEFA Europa League, the continent's second-most prestigious UEFA tournament.

The fixture is set to attract attention far beyond Dorset. Arsenal supporters will also be keeping a close eye on events at Dean Court, knowing a Bournemouth result against City will have major implications at the top of the Premier League table, as the silverware would be heading to North London - that's assuming Arsenal dislodge Burnley in Monday Night Football.

Adding further emotion to the occasion is the realisation that the match represents Iraola’s final home game in charge of the Cherries.

If Bournemouth Don't Get Anything Against City

Should Bournemouth fail to secure the required point against City, there will still be more opportunities. Supporters will quickly switch their focus to Chelsea’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur that same evening, which starts 45 minutes later, knowing that any slip-up from Chelsea would secure European qualification for AFCB. This would simultaneously confirm Spurs' safety, thanks to their vastly superior goal difference over West Ham United, who were humbled at St James' Park on Sunday evening.

The Cherries finish their campaign with another huge encounter against Nottingham Forest next weekend. Should they fail to get anything from City, just a point in that match would definitively secure European football regardless of other results.

Even in the unlikely event Bournemouth stumble in both fixtures, the number of results required elsewhere to deny them Europe appears extremely slim.

Brentford would need to produce a shock win away at Liverpool, in a game that is Mo Salah's Anfield swan-song, while Chelsea would also have to claim maximum points in a difficult trip to Sunderland - a team chasing Europe themselves.

There is even growing belief among supporters that Bournemouth could finish high enough to claim a Champions League place should results elsewhere continue to fall favourably. This would however largely rely on Aston Villa winning the Europa Cup final on Wednesday.

Should Liverpool win against Brentford, as many Cherries fans would hope - and Aston Villa also lose against Manchester City - combined with a Europa Cup win, this would mean that Villa would finish fifth - thereby opening up a sixth Champions League spot.

Therefore, in a bizarre twist, losing to City might actually represent a better chance of Iraola's side securing Champions League football, as City would still be in a title race and have more motivation to beat Villa. However, as well as needing City and Liverpool to win, it would rely on Cherries needing to match whatever Brighton do, but only if they gain maximum points - simple hey...

Failure to better the Seagulls, assuming the other permutations fall into place, would see Cherries pull out the "short straw" of Europa League football - with the Seagulls claiming a coveted UCL spot.

Whatever happens over the coming days though, this season has already cemented itself as one of the finest in Bournemouth’s history. Under Iraola, the Cherries have transformed themselves into genuine European contenders playing some of the most exciting football in the division.

For long-serving Boscombe supporters who remember the club’s darkest days, the possibility of hearing the Cherries’ name mentioned alongside Europe’s elite is almost surreal. The next week could prove emotional, unforgettable, and potentially historic for everyone connected with AFC Bournemouth.
