Another injury blow has left Bournemouth with a decision to make, this time in their defence. Do the Cherries trust the centre backs already at Marco Rose’s disposal, dip back into the transfer market, or could Milosavljevic’s setback simply open the door for one of the club’s emerging youngsters?
The Cherries have been dealt another frustrating injury blow, with young centre back Veljko Milosavljevic facing what has been described as a 'semi long-term' spell on the sidelines. A real sickener for Marco Rose's men, particularly following the confirmation that forward Eli Kroupi would also be out for some time through injury.
The Serbian defender suffered the injury ahead of hoping to feature for Serbia in the Under 19 European Championships, the injury also forced him to miss Bournemouth's pre season training camp in Austria.
It comes at a particularly unfortunate time for Milosavljevic, who would have hoped to use the summer to impress new head coach Marco Rose and push for greater first team involvement during the 2026/27 campaign.
At his age, regular training and competitive minutes are crucial to his development, and a lengthy period on the sidelines will inevitably interrupt that progress. However, the big Serb still has plenty of time on his side and will hope to return stronger once his rehabilitation is complete. Veljko would have been viewed as somebody capable of providing important additional cover at the heart of the Cherries defence, making the uncertainty surrounding his return particularly significant.
Bournemouth's Current Centre Back Options
Currently James Hill looks like one of the most important and key figures in Bournemouth’s first team squad. The central defender has continued to develop well on the south coast and will be hoping to continue as a regular starter during the 2026/27 campaign. He did however lose his main centre back partner following Marcos Senesi's departure to Tottenham. Cherries acted promptly to try and replace the void left by Marcos and Antonio Silva was seen as the man to do just that. The Portuguese international has arrived from Benfica and will expect to come in and prove himself in the Premier League immediately.

Bafode Diakite also provides another senior option, although he will be looking for an improved second season with the Cherries. After an inconsistent first campaign, Bournemouth will hope the Frenchman can rediscover the form that originally convinced the club to bring him to England. Further down the pecking order, Harold William has been one of the encouraging stories of pre season so far. The youngster has impressed when handed opportunities, but Bournemouth may be reluctant to place too much responsibility on him at such an early stage of his development. During the pre season camp in Austria, Lewis Cook deputised in central defence and done so effectively. However, the Englishman appears far more comfortable and influential operating in the heart of midfield.
Potential Options In The Transfer Market
The Cherries have been linked with a number of centre backs during the window, following the departure of key centre back Marcos Senesi. However the main target was clearly Antonio Silva of Benfica, who the club managed to bring in to bolster their defence options.
A number of Premier League club's have been keeping a close eye on Dynamo Kiev centre back Taras Mykhavko, with Bournemouth reportedly one of the sides interested. The young Ukrainian was linked with the Cherries earlier this summer and fits the club's recent recruitment profile of signing young, high potential talent capable of developing into Premier League regulars. Comfortable on the ball and already an established first team player for Dynamo Kyiv, Mykhavko could provide immediate competition while offering long term value.
Another option for the club could be to loan from one of Europe's elite clubs. Finding players struggling for minutes at clubs of that nature could become an attractive option as the end of the transfer window approaches. The Cherries are certainly seen as a side who have a knack of developing young talent, so a move like this could well be seen as a positive one for all parties.
So Bournemouth must now decide whether to trust the defensive options already available, look towards the academy for additional depth, or return to the transfer market.
Either way, Milosavljevic's injury has given the Cherries another unwanted problem to solve before the new season gets underway, but will be confident of dealing with it accordingly.
