Bournemouth head to Stamford Bridge searching for their first Premier League win, but face a major test against an exciting Chelsea side under Xabi Alonso. The Blues have made a bright start to the campaign, even if Alonso’s team are still finding their full rhythm.
Bournemouth’s search for their first Premier League victory of the season takes them to Stamford Bridge this weekend, where they face a Chelsea side that has already shown plenty of promise under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The Cherries will arrive in west London knowing they face a significant challenge, with Chelsea’s attacking quality, energy and willingness to play on the front foot making them a dangerous opponent. Alonso’s side have made an exciting start to life under the Spaniard, although there remains a sense that this is a team still developing and yet to reach its full potential. That could offer Bournemouth encouragement, particularly if they can expose some of the imperfections that remain within Chelsea’s game, especially in defence. However, with the hosts possessing plenty of individual quality and home advantage behind them, Marco Rose’s side will need to produce one of their most disciplined performances of the campaign if they are to come away with the result they crave.

Chelsea have provided plenty of entertainment during the opening stages of the Premier League season, with Xabi Alonso’s side looking particularly dangerous in the final third. Their attacking play has been quick, fluid and full of individual quality, with Chelsea capable of creating chances from a variety of situations and stretching opposition defences with their movement. Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and former Cherries loanee Morgan Rogers do make up quite the front three.
However, the excitement going forward has not always been matched by the organisation at the other end of the pitch. Chelsea have looked vulnerable defensively, with gaps appearing between the lines and moments of uncertainty when opponents have been able to break through their press. At times, their desire to attack has left them exposed in transition, while a lack of defensive cohesion has made matches far more open than Alonso would ideally want.
There is clearly plenty to admire about Chelsea, but they remain a work in progress, and Bournemouth will hope to exploit those imperfections at Stamford Bridge.

With no European football to contend with this season, Chelsea’s expectations will be firmly centred around making significant progress in the Premier League under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard arrives with a strong reputation and, with fewer midweek commitments, has an opportunity to establish his ideas and build momentum across the campaign.
A top four finish will surely be the minimum ambition for a club of Chelsea’s stature and resources, with Champions League qualification likely to be viewed as a key measure of success in Alonso’s first season. There should also be genuine hopes of challenging for silverware, with the FA Cup and EFL Cup providing Chelsea with two realistic opportunities to end the campaign with a trophy. The lack of European distractions could prove particularly valuable in those competitions, allowing Alonso to manage his squad carefully while maintaining a strong Premier League push. For Chelsea, this season represents an opportunity to take another significant step forward.
