As Bournemouth prepare for a historic night on the south coast, Sturm Graz arrive with European pedigree, domestic ambition and plenty of reasons to be taken seriously. The Austrian Champions will be dangerous, so the Cherries need to hit their levels to overcome their first European home test.
Thursday night represents a landmark moment in Bournemouth's history as the Cherries prepare to host its first ever European fixture on home soil. Standing in the club's way are Austrian outfit Sturm Graz, a club with a proud domestic history, a passionate fanbase and valuable experience on the continental stage. While the occasion will undoubtedly be special for Bournemouth supporters, Marco Rose’s side can expect a stern examination from opponents who have established themselves among Austria’s leading clubs in recent years. Sturm Graz are no strangers to competing against European opposition, having featured in both the Champions League and Europa League, and will arrive on the south coast determined to make their own mark on this season’s competition. With their blend of domestic pedigree and European experience, the visitors should not be underestimated.

Sturm Graz arrive on the south coast looking to build on a solid start to their domestic campaign and make their mark in the Europa League. Under head coach Fabio Ingolitsch, the Austrian side have experienced mixed fortunes in the Bundesliga, with three wins, two draws and two defeats from their opening seven matches leaving them fourth in the table. Their form has shown both promise and vulnerability, with eight goals scored and nine conceded, although a 2-0 victory away at Austria Vienna at the weekend provided a timely confidence boost ahead of their trip to Bournemouth.
Their European campaign began with a goalless draw against French side Rennes in Austria. While Rennes enjoyed more of the possession and created the better chances, Sturm defended resolutely and goalkeeper Daniil Khudyakov produced several important saves. The hosts also had opportunities of their own though, with former Nottingham Forest stopper Brice Samba called into action late on. The result gave Sturm a valuable point against strong opposition.
IMAGO / Branislav RackoSturm will now face a significant test against a Bournemouth side competing in the Premier League, and the visitors recognise the scale of the challenge. Their own pre match assessment described the trip as one of the biggest assignments of their season, while more than 600 supporters are expected to make the journey to England, for an historic night at the Vitality Stadium.
The priority for the Austrian's will be to remain competitive throughout the Europa League league phase and give themselves a realistic chance of progressing to the knockout rounds. A positive result at the Vitality Stadium would represent a major boost to those ambitions, particularly against opponents with the quality and intensity associated with English top flight football. Bournemouth may be celebrating a historic European occasion on home soil, but Sturm Graz will be determined to ensure the night is memorable for their travelling supporters, too.
