Yesterday, there was a tangible sense of grief amongst the Cherries fanbase after the announcement that Andoni Iraola is set to depart at the end of the season.

To some cold-blooded onlookers, it might seem like our emotions are overblown and exaggerated, especially given that football is a game of constant change - these things should be expected in football right? How can you get so passionately attached to a bloke that has been paid handsomely to do a job for a few years?

Well, I suspect the answer is that, not many managers have "got" Bournemouth over the years - however Andoni, despite a relatively short tenure, seemed to somehow encapsulate everything that the club represents in such a short amount of time - hard work, embracing community, showing humility, but also - providing entertainment.

For Boscombe supporters - this isn’t just about losing a head coach - it’s about the impending departure of a connection that has grown deeper with every performance, every honest interview, and every shared high.

And there really have been some highs haven't there? The numerous comebacks, the Man Utd wins, the masterminding of "impossible" thrashings at Newcastle, beating Manchester City for the first time, the Luton 4-3, the trio of wins against our nearest and dearest, and even most recently - dislodging a team that we all thought were the "champions elect".

Iraola hasn’t simply managed Bournemouth - he’s understood it, embodied it, and elevated it. Bonds between fans and managers are a rare but cherished thing in football - but even in his relatively brief tenure, Iraola hasn’t simply managed us - he was us - which is why this emotional mania that we're collectively experiencing just feels so raw.

Whilst he will disappear off into the sunset to pastures new at the end of the season, we still have a number of games to experience more special moments with this man at the helm - and he will leave Vitality Stadium having created not only a legacy, but a benchmark.

Indeed, right now, Bournemouth fans are perhaps struggling to imagine how any other manager can emulate what he has done for the Cherries, but just like any relationship that ends with sadness, it doesn't necessarily mean that the same magic cannot be recreated with a new managerial talisman.

And that's the aim with AFC Bournemouth.

After Eddie left, a key part of the club's restructuring was to create a "modular" system, an organisation which can hand-pick and amalgamate players or head coaches that possessed a particular skillset - people who could fit in seamlessly - thus preventing one person having a finger in too many pies.

There was a desire to avoid the necessity of having to have a "unicorn" head coach - in favour of employing personnel that simply had the right attributes which fitted the club's philosophy and vision. Fortunately, for the hierarchy at Vitality Stadium, Andoni tessellated with the ethos perfectly - like a glove, almost too well.

But that's not to say it can't happen again.

So whilst we ponder the future of AFC Bournemouth, it felt futile not to write a ten-point love letter of just why Andoni Iraola has been so good for the club and it's supporters.

1. His Tactical Style

One of the biggest reasons why Bournemouth fans took to him. His aggressive pressing, attacking play, and willingness to take risks against top sides has made the team exciting to watch again, giving supporters a clear identity they can believe in.

2. His personality

Fans love his personality just as much as his tactics. Iraola’s calm, smiley demeanour on the touchline and in interviews makes him instantly likeable. He carries himself without ego, he never complained, and he brought a refreshing warmth that contrasts with the intensity of modern football management.

3. Connection with Fans

One of his standout traits is his ability to connect with supporters. Whether applauding the North Stand all the way to the Ted Mac, or speaking respectfully about the fanbase, Iraola has built a genuine bond that makes fans feel valued and part of the journey.

4. Honesty in Interviews

Iraola’s honesty resonates strongly. He tells it like it is, he tells it how the fans view it. No deflection, no excuses. Whether discussing poor performances or big wins, his transparency built trust with fans who appreciate a manager that speaks openly rather than hiding behind clichés. "In them moments" (yes, I am making a dig at you Parker), he has been a class apart.

5. The Statement Wins

The big results under Iraola have been unforgettable. Wins against top-six opposition and bold performances away from home have given fans moments to cherish, proving Bournemouth can compete with anyone when executing his game plan.

6. His Humility

His humility is another quality supporters admire. Despite praise and growing recognition, Iraola consistently deflects credit to his players and staff. Would he be the type of gaffa to bullishly stand there and appear on Monday Night Football? No. He has grounded approach which reinforces a strong team-first culture that fans deeply respect.

7. Bravery

Fans appreciate his bravery. Iraola isn’t afraid to stick to his principles, even when results initially don’t go his way. The commitment to his philosophy shows conviction, and supporters love a manager who doesn’t abandon his ideas at the first sign of pressure. 2-0 down to Everton after 86 minutes? Don't worry - Andoni has it covered.

8. Player Development

His player development has been a major positive. Iraola has improved individuals across the squad, giving underperforming players new confidence and roles. Christie, Semenyo, Cook, Hill, even our 173 year-old right-back Adam Smith (give or take a few years), the list goes on - fans enjoy seeing players grow and thrive under a coach who clearly elevates those around him.

9. Method in Madness

There’s a clear sense of organisation in his teams, even when fans don't understand it - Cook as a right-back? Tav playing deep? Christie as a six? It's madness, but there's method to it. Plus, from defensive shape to coordinated pressing triggers, Bournemouth have always looked well-drilled and purposeful - no matter how wild it looks on paper.

10. Restoring Belief

Perhaps most importantly, Iraola has restored belief. He’s made fans dream again - of progress, of competing higher up the table, and of a club moving forward with ambition. How often have we had to look over our shoulder? Barely at all. That emotional connection is priceless, and it’s why he’s held in such high regard.

There are probably not enough superlatives to convey how good Andoni Iraola has been for Bournemouth. His personality and passion has ensured that he will leave Vitality Stadium as not only a hero, but a legend.

He will depart with every AFC Bournemouth fan wishing him the best of luck, and needless to say, whenever he can get down here, he'll always be welcome back in these parts for an Estrella and a Paella...

¡Bravo!
