Bournemouth "Still Keen" on Mandas Despite Petrovic Roadblock

Reports emerging from Italy suggest AFC Bournemouth are keen to retain goalkeeper Christos Mandas beyond the end of his loan spell, despite the Greek international failing to make a Premier League appearance during the 2025/26 campaign.

Mandas arrived from Lazio with a reported purchase option worth around €18 million, but according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Bournemouth are hoping to negotiate a lower fee with the Serie A side.

Sporting director Tiago Pinto - recently lauded by new head coach Marco Rose, is understood to remain interested in securing the 24-year-old on a permanent basis, though not necessarily at the pre-agreed valuation.

The goalkeeper found opportunities hard to come by on the south coast largely due to the outstanding form of Djordje Petrovic, whose performances helped Bournemouth enjoy a remarkable and unbeaten second half of the season. The Serbian established himself as one of the Premier League's standout goalkeepers, making it impossible for Mandas to force his way into the starting XI.

Despite his lack of game time, Bournemouth's interest in retaining Mandas appears undiminished. The arrival of Marco Rose as head coach and the club's qualification for the Europa League could significantly alter the goalkeeper landscape next season, with far more fixtures on the calendar and increased squad rotation expected.

However, Bournemouth may not have a clear path to a permanent deal.

Back in Rome, Lazio have also undergone managerial change, with Gennaro Gattuso replacing Maurizio Sarri following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. The situation has been complicated further by growing interest in first-choice goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, who has reportedly attracted attention from Inter Milan.

Should Provedel depart, Gattuso is believed to view Mandas as a viable successor, potentially reducing Lazio's willingness to sell. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Edoardo Motta, who impressed while Provedel underwent shoulder surgery earlier this season, is expected to remain at the club, but is not seen as first choice just yet, so could he be understudy for a returning Mandas?

Speaking to Back of the Net – The AFC Bournemouth Podcast in January, Lazio Stories writer Simon Basten described Mandas as a player with enormous potential who had already convinced many supporters in Rome that he was ready for a bigger role.

"Lazio bought him as a third keeper a couple of years ago," Basten explained. "When he was called to do the job, he did it very well. You could see he has a lot of potential. He's a good keeper already now."

The Italian football writer highlighted the physical attributes that have made Mandas such a highly-rated prospect.

"He's a very physical goalkeeper. You can see he's massive. He's got massive shoulders. He's very, very athletic."

Basten also revealed that many Lazio supporters had pushed for Mandas to become the club's first-choice goalkeeper during periods when Provedel struggled for form.

"Many fans wanted Mandas to take his place. During the course of the season some people were saying, 'Why don't we use Mandas instead?'"

While still developing aspects of his game, particularly his distribution consistency, Basten believes the Greek international possesses all the tools required to reach the very highest level.

"I think Mandas has a bit of both," he said. "He can be a very consistent goalkeeper and also be able to perform those miracle saves that one asks from a goalkeeper."

Perhaps most intriguingly for Bournemouth supporters, Basten suggested Mandas' ceiling could be exceptionally high if given regular opportunities.

"I think that Mandas is potentially a great keeper," he said. "If he manages to become a first-team goalkeeper and does well, he could follow in the footsteps of players like Donnarumma."

The comments underline why Bournemouth remain interested despite Mandas spending most of his loan spell watching from the sidelines. Petrovic's brilliance may have denied him opportunities this season, but with European football arriving at the Vitality Stadium and uncertainty surrounding Bournemouth's long-term goalkeeping situation, the story of Christos Mandas on the south coast may not be over just yet.
