Justin Kluivert has returned to full training after five months out, handing Bournemouth a timely boost in their European push. Even if limited to the bench, his attacking threat, versatility and experience could prove vital in key moments as Andoni Iraola’s side chase a historic finish.

Kluivert return boosts Bournemouth’s late push for Europe hopes

Mark McAdam has delivered a timely boost for AFC Bournemouth supporters, revealing that Justin Kluivert has returned to full training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Sky Sports reporter shared the update via social media this afternoon, stating that the Dutch midfielder has rejoined first-team sessions this week and could be in contention for a return to the squad this weekend, should he come through the final stages of his recovery programme.

Kluivert has been absent for around five months, making his potential return a significant moment for not only Bournemouth’s season run-in, but also his own World Cup hopes with the Netherlands.

He has been an important attacking player for AFC Bournemouth in recent seasons, particularly as a versatile forward/attacking midfielder. His importance has not only stemmed from his technical ability, but also his directness, his threat from set pieces, and a role in linking play in a system that emphasises high pressing and quick transitions.

In the 2024/25 season, Kluivert was one of Bournemouth's standout performers. He finished as the club's top goalscorer with 12 goals and added 6 assists. This season, before his injury, he had made around 18-19 appearances (many from the bench), but his output has been more modest.

For Andoni Iraola and his side, the timing of a return could hardly be better. With the Cherries firmly in the mix for a potential European place, squad depth is becoming increasingly crucial.

Even if he is not immediately ready to start, his presence alone offers Iraola more options. Popular in the changing room, having Kluivert available on the bench gives Bournemouth an extra layer of attacking unpredictability, particularly in matches that may require a late spark or a shift in momentum.

There is also a psychological lift to consider. The return of a key player at this stage of the season can energise both teammates and supporters alike, reinforcing belief that Bournemouth have the tools to sustain their push - plus, his penalty taking prowess is also useful if either Marcus Tavernier or Junior Kroupi are not on the pitch.

With a crucial fixture against Crystal Palace on the horizon, all eyes will be on whether Kluivert completes the week’s training without issue. If he does, his inclusion in the matchday squad - even in a limited capacity - could be a quietly influential factor.

As Bournemouth chase what would be a historic European qualification, moments like this - small on the surface, but significant in impact - could make all the difference.
