Former Cherries star Antoine Semenyo fired Manchester City to FA Cup glory at Wembley, handing AFC Bournemouth a major boost in the race for European football. With Andoni Iraola’s side needing just one point from their final two games, a historic continental place is now within touching distance.

Semenyo Gives AFC Bournemouth Huge European Qualification Boost

Former AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo was the hero at Wembley as his FA Cup final winner for Manchester City not only secured silverware for Pep Guardiola’s side, but also handed the Cherries a significant boost in their pursuit of European football.

With City already having sealed qualification for next season’s Champions League, their FA Cup triumph means the Europa League place awarded to the cup winners is instead redistributed through the Premier League standings. That development strengthens Bournemouth’s hopes of securing a historic place in Europe for the first time.

As things stand, the top five Premier League teams will qualify for the Champions League, though that number could yet rise to six. If Aston Villa finish fifth and then lift the Europa League trophy, UEFA regulations would allow their league-earned European Performance Spot to pass down to the sixth-placed side. While Villa face a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium, the scenario remains very much possible heading into the final stretch of the campaign. Liverpool would also need to beat Brentford at Mo Salah's swansong at Anfield.

Manchester City’s defeat of Chelsea also completed the first part of a sequence of results that could see Bournemouth confirm European qualification before kicking a ball in Tuesday’s clash with Guardiola’s men. For that to happen, Everton would need to fail to beat Sunderland on Merseyside, while Brentford would also have to lose at home against Crystal Palace.

Even if those results do not fall in Bournemouth’s favour, the equation remains straightforward for Andoni Iraola’s side. A single point from their final two league matches would be enough to mathematically secure European football and cap off a remarkable season on the south coast.

Semenyo once again demonstrated why he has been one of the standout players in English football this term. The Ghana international, who has earned a nomination for Premier League Player of the Season, produced the decisive moment in an otherwise cagey FA Cup final. With 16 minutes remaining, he latched onto Erling Haaland’s delivery and guided a brilliant first-time finish beyond Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to settle the contest at Wembley.

For Bournemouth supporters, there is an added sense of belief around what lies ahead. Under Iraola, the club have developed into one of the Premier League’s most exciting and organised sides, combining fearless attacking football with consistency against the division’s elite. With European qualification now within touching distance, the Cherries find themselves in the strongest position in the club’s history - and the prospect of continental football at the Vitality Stadium is becoming increasingly real.
