The Seagulls swap Manchester for Madrid, facing a statistically dismal side defined by physical play and long balls. Can Brighton overcome Spanish grit to secure a historic victory?
Brighton and Hove Albion travel to the Spanish capital ahead of a memorable away fixture against Getafe. Albion in Madrid – who would’ve thought we’d ever see the day?
How good are Getafe?
Getafe aren’t exactly the highest quality of opponents; in fact, their FotMob statistics are quite comical when delving into their La Liga season so far.
They sit bottom of the league for shots on target per game (2.70). For context, Barcelona lead the way with 8.10! As for their xG, that comes in at a measly 7.60, once again placing them at the bottom of the entire division for xG created so far this season.
Again, Barça are the best in the business, with 38.0. Staggering, mind!
Getafe are 18th for goals per game (0.70) and bottom for big chances missed (4). So they’re not only bad at creating opportunities, but they aren’t clinical either!
They’re bottom for passes completed (220.5) per game, while Barça complete 639.5 accurate passes per 90. Insane.
It gets funnier, though. Getafe are third in the league for long balls completed per 90 (28.6). The difference being, Barcelona is nowhere to be seen in this top three! Perhaps surprisingly, Real Madrid are just above them in second with 28.7 per game.
Fouls per game? Getafe are third. A messy 14.5 fouls per game is rather excessive.
This, in turn, means they lead the way for most yellow cards (35) so far this season, and red cards (5) in all of La Liga. A dirty, long-ball team that struggles to create or score chances. This could be one hell of a 0-0 if I’ve ever seen one!
How could Brighton cope against them?
Albion aren’t exactly known for setting the Conference League alight away from home so far. 0-0 draws both times out against both Jablonec and Tromso in the qualifier show that these games won’t be easy.
However, huge 4-0 wins at home in both the Tromso returning leg and Zalgiris give a different impression.
The Seagulls are expected to rotate their side after last week's Manchester City double header. A huge 1-0 away win at the Etihad has given fans confidence that they can take on anyone in the Premier League this season.
We’ve all seen crazy moments before, but the first-ever City away win might be right up there in Albion history. The media are even mentioning the word ‘title’ about us!
Overall, the game is hard to call, despite appearing rather one-sided on paper. Realistically, the Seagulls shouldn’t be looking at anything other than a win this Thursday, but we all know it doesn’t work like that.
Despite that, I personally expect a win, and with the likes of Georginio Rutter firing and Yankuba Minteh returning to the side, I can see it going our way.
If we can break down the low block, it’ll be a comfortable win for Fabian Hürzeler.
Prediction: Getafe 0-2 Albion.
