Fabian Hürzeler gains vital tactical flexibility as Yankuba Minteh’s electric pace and Mats Wieffer’s midfield composure offer a timely boost to a squad depleted by recent injuries.

After a couple of days of reflection, there were a lot of positives to take from Albion's heartbreaking defeat during the week against Manchester City on penalties. Not least the performances of returning players like Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer.

How Important Is Yankube Minteh?

Brighton have played Diego Gomez and Maxim De Cuyper in nearly every game so far this season, which is fine, but at some point there will be a need to look deeper into the squad for alternatives. Annoyingly for Fabian Hürzeler, that opportunity hasn't really existed, with a growing injury list mounting.

Luckily, last time out, we finally saw returns from both Minteh and Wieffer, who both had very encouraging games. Particularly Minteh, who needs to be zoomed in on.

The Gambian winger has always been one of the most exciting forwards at the club when looking at the nature of out-and-out wingers. Barring Kaoru Mitoma, Albion don't really have tricky or pacey forwards on the wings. While that hasn't been an issue so far this season, it seems to be coming to a point where a change could be welcomed.

Minteh is electric. Quick, effective, and always looking to take on the man in front of him. A traditional winger who simply enjoys the challenge of facing up to a full-back in tight positions. He did that well against City, and countered the dynamic of Jeremy Doku's introduction for the hosts.

Doku stretched the side, gave City a newfound outlet and a different way of attacking Brighton, and it was working. Both sides played fairly high lines, and players like Minteh and Doku are capable of exploiting those if given the chance.

Minteh could have won the game for the Seagulls with one of the last touches of the 90 minutes.

A curling, dangerous left-footed effort was well saved by Rulli in goal. Many Albion fans would have thought they won it, and it was an almost carbon copy of the shot he had against David Raya at Arsenal last season. His dynamism and pace were hurting City too.

How about Mats Wieffer?

Wieffer had a quietly effective reintroduction. Slotting back into the midfield, the Dutchman had a good opportunity to score, which he may even look back on with the feeling that he should have done so. A tight position, but his effort almost found the bottom corner, but for the City woodwork.

With Pascal Groß playing a hefty number of minutes, and Yasin Ayari seemingly dipping in form, it could be interesting to see whether Wieffer is recalled back to the starting 11, or even favoured over Costinha at right-back.

Costinha has been okay, but has been tested ruthlessly by Cody Gakpo and Doku, and has struggled with the challenge. With that in mind, Ferdi Kadioglu is back available, which could see him return immediately to right-back.

If that is to be the case, Wieffer would be effective in returning to midfield. Albion have sometimes struggled with transitions and ball winning when players are tired. Ayari has started to slack in this, and Wieffer could offer more control in possession.

He is also capable of a mean line-breaking pass, which could allow for Minteh's darting runs to be found with accuracy.

His return, most importantly, offers a break for the aforementioned Gomez, Ayari, and Groß.

The returns of both are well-timed for Hürzeler's side. The head coach wants revenge, and an added edge to his choices could be the difference this weekend!
