Despite an absolute nightmare season for him on the injury front, a Chelsea first team player has been named in his nation's World Cup preliminary squad
Once tomorrow’s FA Cup final is over - which will hopefully have been a successful day - the attention of Chelsea fans will soon turn to this summer’s World Cup in North America.
There will still be two Premier League games remaining, but they are, by and large, dead rubbers. That said, there is the potential to play a part in sending Spurs down next Tuesday, depending on how West Ham United get on away to Newcastle United on Sunday.
Either way, we are fast approaching the World Cup, the biggest sporting event on the planet. With it, there is already a growing excitement and anticipation all across the globe.
Fans of Chelsea will be very excited to watch the team’s players do their thing for their respective nations from all over the world, and the possibilities of Blues players going head to head.
One Chelsea player who could well be playing at the World Cup is Levi Colwill. Despite suffering an ACL injury on the eve of the season, he made his return to action with 45 minutes off the bench against Nottingham Forest 11 days ago.
Then, last week at Anfield, he made his first start since the Club World Cup final, playing the 90 minutes and producing an excellent, assuring performance at the heart of the Chelsea defence, as if nothing had happened to him.
Well, this hasn’t gone unrecognised, as England boss Thomas Tuchel has, according to Kieran Gill, named Colwill in his 55 man preliminary squad for the tournament. In exactly one week today, Tuchel will announce his final, 26 man squad to be boarding the plane.
Now, that is a big jump, so there are no assurances. However, to be named in even a preliminary squad after just 135 minutes of game time is a big green flag. If he plays well in tomorrow’s FA Cup final, well, that will have given his chances an almighty boost. You'd imagine that Tuchel will be in attendance, particularly as there is no Premier League game taking place on Saturday.
Earlier this week, Joao Pedro revealed that Cole Palmer is desperate for an England vs Brazil quarterfinal match up. How cool would it be if all three of Pedro, Colwill and Palmer feature in the game. Perhaps even Andrey Santos too, although unfortunately not Estevao, who will miss the tournament with a hamstring injury.
