According to reports out of the British media, Chelsea want to sign a player in three key positions this summer transfer window, as they back Xabi Alonso

Now, the footballing consciousness may be now geared towards the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, but there is still an absolutely huge summer ahead for Chelsea.

It will be the first transfer window and pre-season under new manager Xabi Alonso, and it absolutely crucial that the club make sure they rectify recent mistakes and avoid another season - or one even remotely close - like last time out.

Simply put, last summer's transfer window was not good enough. So, a big window is very important this time round. It is paramount that the club back Alonso and give him what he wants and needs.

Well, it seems as if there are three positions particularly in mind. Indeed, as journalist Bobby Vincent is reporting that the club's three priority positions this summer are a central defender, central midfielder, and left winger.

Well, two of those positions are a serious indictment on just how bad last summer was. The fact the club did not sign a centre back after the injury to Levi Colwill - despite Enzo Maresca's public plea - was gross negliegence.

In fact, it is actually a good segway to the second position that is damning on last summer. Indeed, as rather than sign a centre back, the club decided to instead buy Alejandro Garnacho, a left winger. Who simply isn't very good at football.

Around £90m spent on the Argentine and Jamie Gittens last summer. Two left winger. And yet, 12 months later, it is one of three priortity positions. If you don't laugh you'll cry. What an absolute shambles.

As for central midfield, this one is more interesting. Could this perhaps suggest Enzo Fernandez is off? That said, some would argue that a central midfielder is needed anyway. The former Benfica man often plays further forward these days. Meanwhile, Moises Caicedo was not the same in the second half of the season, and Andrey Santos is understandably inconsistent at his young age.

There have been links to Nottingham Forest and England midfielder, Elliot Anderson, but he is now being heavily, heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, so it feels like that sort of move is unfortunately out of Chelsea's ball park, but we will see.

Meanwhile, it is hard to know who the club will target in the other two positions. Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace has been mentioned in passing regarding central defence, now that would be a very, very good signing.
