Colombian Mayra Ramirez played again for Chelsea Women after suffering an injury in August of last year. Her return arrived at the best possible moment, following the announcement of Sam Kerr’s departure.
Mayra Ramirez played a match again with Chelsea Women since August of last year, when she suffered an injury. The Colombian player was able to see minutes again after spending 287 days unavailable, something simply impressive. But the moment was the best because, as many know, the legendary Australian player, Sam Kerr, has said goodbye to the team, ending her stage of more than six years with the team.
It is true that, if we compare the statistics side by side for Ramirez and Kerr, the numbers for the Australian are much larger, with a total of 115 goals throughout her career at the club. In contrast, Mayra has scored 12 goals since she arrived in 2023; however, taking into account that her role had previously been as a substitute because Kerr was the undisputed starter, we will have to see how the Colombian performs in this new stage.
In her farewell to the club, Kerr said the following: “When I think about my career at Chelsea and doing it for the last time, I just feel happy,” Kerr said in a club statement. “Happy that it happened, and I feel very grateful to have played for this club for six years and to have won every trophy we could.”
Without a doubt, it is a farewell that hurts all the club’s fans, because she is not just another player; she is the scorer, a fundamental piece in the scheme of the dominant Chelsea of recent years, winner of five WSL titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, and the Community Shield.
Now, Ramirez must take on the scoring role of the team, a difficult task but not impossible for a player with her abilities; she is strong and accurate, she knows how to move in the area and her precision is lethal, but she must respond soon, because there are rumors that due to Kerr’s departure, Chelsea would be interested in signing the forward from Manchester City who snatched the league title from them this season, Khadija Shaw.
Without a doubt, the competition will be fierce, with a young Sandy Baltimore who will not cross her arms watching Ramirez earn the starting spot again; the former Paris Saint-Germain player also wants to earn a place in the starting lineup for next season.
